View Full Version : Keukenhof- Like nothing I've ever seen before!!!

April 6th, 2014, 02:22 PM
A friend who lived over here as an expat told us to hurry up and go to Keukenhof so we wouldn't miss the tulips. It was raining this morning but we put on our rain gear and headed out the door. It's about an hour's drive from Baarn to Lisse. I took close to 270 pictures while we were there. What a magnificent place. I won't bore you with too many photos but I figured you might enjoy seeing these.72819728277282672825728247282372822728217282 072828

Ah the Keukenhof!! I've been there, years ago. But does that mean you live in The Netherlands now, Rebecca?

Oh wow! Thank you for sharing! My daffodils are just starting to poke out of the ground here in Central IL.

We have a large tulip area to the north of us.....hopefully when I am on vacation, at least I and maybe Monkey Man, will make it up there. The daffodils are already blooming and the tulips are just starting to open, so I timed my time off well.

Gorgeous! I love spring flowers. I've been out today cleaning up my flower bed....now I can see the flowers. The crocuses are blooming and the daffodils are almost ready to bloom, I think it will be a bit before my tulips bloom.

Yes, Klasien. We'll definitely have to meet up at some point. Maybe it'll work out for us to get together when you're paying your sis a visit. I'd love to treat you two to lunch.

Pat you must be talking about Skaggitt Valley tulip festival. My daughter took me there when I was visiting. It took my breathe away. 360 degrees as far as you can see blooming tulips. I have a pic somewhere, I'll try to find it. You should go if you have the chance.

Rebecca there is a story about Canada and The Netherlands which I will share with you. We have a huge tulip festival here in Ottawa.

The world's largest tulip festival, now encompassing an 10-day celebration each May, was established in 1953 to preserve the heritage of Canada's role in liberating the Dutch during the Second World War. The symbolic tulip Ottawa's official flower was given as a gift in perpetuity to the Canadian people for having provided safe harbour to the Dutch Royal Family during the German Occupation of the Netherlands. The tulip remains a valuable symbol of friendship and of spring, with special meaning to the people of Canada and its National Capital Region.

Those interested can read more here:

Thanks for the Canadian history on the tradition of tulips in Canada. Very interesting. You'll have to share some pictures of your celebration so we can see your lovely flowers.

Thank you so much for posting, Rebecca! I am so looking forward to seeing actual flowers growing outside! I bought some small potted hyacinths and daffodils for my breezeway, and some lilies for the altar at church (still all closed up but should be open by Easter), but there's just nothing like seeing them in bloom outdoors. These gardens are truly magnificent.

Loved the pics. Thanks for sharing. I love flowers! My dau-in-law is from Spakenburg. I was in Holland just once in 1990 for their very traditional wedding, which lasted all day! My son was in the Air Force & met her while stationed over there. What a delightful experience. Her mom still wears the traditional Dutch costume (dif. from your pic). JCY
