YAY! Sandy!! YAY! Pam!! I see y'all already in the group :icon_cool:

The only problem I see is that there isn't a designated size - when I get my 7 inch, 8 inch, 12 inch, 5 inch blocks back I may have problems putting them all together . . . BUT, I do have some wonderful fabric to use for a background . . .

I am very anxious!!!

Could I ask how many people typically join in? I'm thinking of doing this when I'm back in the states. I come home near the end of May and this will give me a project to work on while I'm visiting Mom and my sister in VA. I always take something to sew since my sister works full-time and I have no car when I'm there. It will keep me busy while I'm keeping my 90 year-old Mom company during the day. I really am afraid to commit. What if 50 people sign up?!? Please let me know. I think it would be fun to join in.

I think different block sizes is a cool idea. Just think of all the different options and layouts we are going to have. Each quilt will be so unique.

Hi Rebecca :) LOVE to have you join us!!
we have had 12 ladies in the first swap and 18 ladies in the christmas swap and the b/w fan that are just finishing up had 23 players. Just the right number to be fun (and useful) when the blocks are swapped out and return home :)

Sally - you are so silly! just think how COOL these will be pieced WITH the blocks from last summers swap! i can so see that! :icon_cool: but i do understand - i have a set from a couple of years ago on another group that are still to be pieced together...they are all blues and not as much fun as what we have created here! LOL

Suzi...that is one quilt top I have done using last summers blocks. I still need to finish my Christmas blocks and then there will be the fan block quilt. Plus I am doing a barcello quilt and finishing the lap quilt I am currently working on. WOW reading this list I am feeling overwhelmed....lol!:lol:

I have a question about the blocks. When will we officially start making the blocks? I mean, the no duplicate blocks could be a problem. You know me, Suzi. I am always early, so want to start on the blocks ASAP.

pdjewelrylady
March 5th, 2011, 02:03 PM
GO fo it Blondie! :) yippppeeeee!!

I was meaning by no duplicates that each player make her blocks all the same (so I will be making all the same Four Corner Puzzle blocks) but no 2 players are making the same. I will start a thread on the groups page for each player to let everyone know what block pattern they are making :) good idea. SIGN UP NOW LADIES and choose your blocks YAY!! (Keep It Super Simple! and have Fun with it) looking forward to the awesome blocks y'all will be creating! :)

I have never done a block swap. I gather that each person makes the required number of blocks and then I am not sure what happens next. I gather you send the blocks somewhere, (to a hostess, what is a hostess?) Please someone explain the details to me.

novice quilter
March 5th, 2011, 04:53 PM
Another question, you make the required number of blocks, I understand. Are all the blocks that one person makes all the same?

pdjewelrylady
March 5th, 2011, 05:36 PM
Hi NQ :)
yes all the blocks you will be making will be the same block pattern of your choice. (15 players = 15 blocks for example - that actual number will be determined on March 20 when sign up for this swap closes)
After you have completed 1 block for each player in the swap including yourself you will then mail them to me - i am the hostess - my address for mailing will be posted in the group discussions - along with a stamped return addressed envelope.
Once I have recvd everyones blocks - around the end of June for this swap - i trade them around so you will get 1 from each other player (they will all be different - like in the summer block swap from last summer) and I mail them back to you in the envelope you provided.......
FUN and Easy! :) and a great way to make new quilty lady friends!!
I hope you will play :)

pdjewelrylady
March 5th, 2011, 06:12 PM
ALSO - for those of you "thinking about it" - please jump in!!
There are No Quilt Police in our groups so every level of quilter is WELCOME to play! :)
Swaps are a fun way to learn how to create a new block or just sharpen a skill and meet some new friends. We welcome stash busting!! great way to swap older fabrics that no one else will have! (LOVE THAT!!)
The resulting quilt will be one you will forever cherish and always talk about and say "I made that one with my Quilty Lady Friends on the Missouri Star Quilt Co forum" !
See YOU in the group :)

OK, I'm in. I found some fabric today. I found some really cute stuff yesterday, but it wasn't "skin/hide/hair print". I just had wild animals all over it. Cute enough that I may go back and get some for me if I find some extra cash!

The other thing that can be done if these swaps get to big is to put a size limit per group, and then have multiple groups. You would have to be looking at over 25 swappers for that most likely.

HI-

I have never done a swap before! This could be very interesting.. Should the animal fabric be more adult themed or is anyone using kid type wild animal fabrics? I will have to go looking but wanted to know before I bought anything. Any particular size you prefer? I will get back and sign up within a few days. Thank you!

pdjewelrylady
March 6th, 2011, 11:31 PM
For this swap use Wild Animal (skin) prints like the pictured examples on the groups page, these blocks want to play nice together after they are swapped......so keep with the look of the safari type animals - zebra, tiger, lepoard, giraffe, cheeta etc..... not novelty prints featuring animals - we can do that with a different swap. :)

block pattern and size is your choice - be sure to join the group and let everyone know on the list thread - only one player per block pattern!!

YAY! Cathy - glad you are going to play with us :) should be really COOL! swap blocks when finished! :)

From the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) tab above:
Attachments and Images

How do I attach a file to a post?

To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread.

On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment either from your computer or from another URL by using the appropriate box on this page. Alternatively you can click the Attachment Icon to open this page.

To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'.

Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.

What files types can I use? How large can attachments be?

In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board.

How do I add an image to a post?

If you have uploaded an image as an attachment, you can click the arrow next to the 'Attachment Icon' and select it from the list. This will be inserted into your post and can be located where you want it displayed.

To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing before the URL and after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert pictures from your albums (?) in this way too.

I'm going to start on making the real blocks instead of the mock-up today. I cleaned off my old art desk in the basement and shampooed the rugs yesterday so I can set my machine up in a permanent home and get cracking! (My b-day present to me, I get to quilt most of the day today.)

Being a clutter-bug married to a pack-rat this is more of an accomplishment then it sounds. LOL I'm so excited to get started on this, and to NOT be doing it at the kitchen table where I have to put it all away before hubby gets home.

Anybody have a preference for size of block. I can make the "Claws" pattern in either 9 or 12 inch squares. I have a sample of the claws pattern in my album. That one is in turquoise and blue, but this one will be in Zebra print. I'll be making a mock up over the weekend and hope to post a pic here when done.
Thanks!

There is no harm in playing with other block patterns, but don't commit yourself to making 26 of something that will make you crazy! How plain can they be anyway? They are made with animal prints!

I've only got two made so far....but I do have some block sets made so I have another four on the way. The block with the two quarter square triangles and 1 half square is a real pita. Taking me way longer then I thought. I need to kick myself into gear and get more finished.

The best thing I have found with swapping blocks is to make up a couple at a time, when i think about it. :icon_cool: i find for me it is important to NOT put them toooo far off to any one side. Always have the fabrics or blocks or cut pieces in sight and within reach..... This helps to keep it stress free and they are completed and are ready ready to send off to the hostess right on time (or early - love it when that happens!) :D
*I learned this when my girls were in school - it always made me so crazy when they would say "mom, i have a project due tomorrow that i haven't started on yet"...... ugh! crazy kids!! LOL

Lisa H,
Don't worry, I haven't started mine yet either. The fabric is sitting on the table, but I HAVE to finish a few things first. I can't get to cutting until I get the other blocks off the table. I'll be wrapping up a SIX year old UFO and completing a year long round robin swap with the two thinks on the table. Then I can do the Wild Thing guilt free, well, almost.

Thanks Suzi. That is what I am doing. I have a cloth basket on its side with the wild fabric in it. All other fabric is in a hope chest that I have to move things off of in order to get to it. (Well, except the pillowcase fabric I bought for my two girls.) But the pillowcases are going to be my prize for getting the next four or six wild blocks finished.

Speaking of kids homework projects - my 9yo finished her book report book two weeks ago. Now she needs to write the report. Gotta get her on that later today.

Oh my gosh, Sandy!!!!! They're gorgeous! I don't know how you're going to part with them either. What a gorgeous quilt that makes. I just finished my blocks and somehow ended up with 31. Don't know how that happened. The method for piecing this block left me with a ton of small half square triangle pairs. I'm going to make mini-pinwheels with them. Maybe I can combine the four big blocks with the little pinwheels and make a small quilt. I just need to clean up the edges of the blocks and then put them away til I get back to the states end of this month. Do you have enough fabric left over to make yourself a D9P quilt with them. Even if it's a small quilt it would be sooooo pretty.

I've never participated in a block swap, but am thinking of hosting one for a group I belong to. Can someone give me the down and dirty on the particulars involved in one. It's my turn to host, and never having done any of the group/guild type stuff before I'm at a loss. What are some of the other activities that groups/guilds do when members are spread out all over the country....we've recently finished a round robin and an ugly quilt challenge which were quite fun so I certainly don't want to repeat those.

Muhahaha. Just figured out that the amount of block units I just stripped together, once cut, resown and cut, will give me all the units of the hard block I need to make my 27. I was starting to worry that I might not have enough of the fabrics. but I should.

Here is a question though, most of my blocks will end up around 9 inches. Some will be more like 12. It doesn't really matter does it? Since everyone is only getting one block.

I would if I were you. I'm actually getting 2 more quits out of the fabric I bought for the swap. Those first blocks I made (before I changed my block for the swap) will make one quilt and then I ended up with a bunch of little triangles that were left from my piecing for the actual swap block. I had so many that I was able to make a bunch of small pinwheels for another quilt. Then there's the third quilt from the swap blocks.

I've been meaning to ask you about your profile picture. Please explain the face makeup, etc. I love that photo!

Rebecca, isn't it amazing how those little pieces add up to make a decent sized quilt? I had a crib sized pinwheel quilt done with all of the leftover HSTs from a wedding quilt. I almost tossed them, but decided to hang on to them for when I wanted some mindless sewing. Next time I'll square them all up first! It was a bit wonky at the finish.

Thanks for you comments on the blocks. Suzi said I can't use the fabric with the zebra faces for this swap. So I'll use that for a quilt for here. I have all of the green wedges cut out, now I am working on the black background fabric pieces, then on the zebra print. I forgot how many pieces it meant that I would have to cut out for 27 blocks when I decided on this pattern! I guess it is the finished project that matters!
Sam, thanks for you lovely comments. I have the blinds pulled unless I'm working in the sewing space. I also have a piece of decorative denim that I hang over the wire bins for added protection. Trying to avoid sun bleaching the fabric if at all possible!

I'll be careful not to throw away my scraps until I've really taken a look at what's left. Fabric seems to be getting more expensive. No point in wasting what can be used in another project. The big problem is figuring out what should be tossed. Some are pretty obvious and others I'm not so sure.

Hey, I just looked at my avatar thingy and it says I'm "The Guild President." That's a joke, right? Otherwise, I'm gonna have to duke it out with Suzi since hers says she's "The Guild President."

No duking it out over titles - but you can duke it out over quilting scraps or fat quarters!!!

There are a bunch of us with the title of guild president. It's like being the king of your own castle. I think the queen is the only one who can make you a duke, or in your case, a dutchess. :D

AARG! Finally signed all my blocks, and I'm one short. Have to drag out the leftover material and cut some more pieces. Darn!

toggpine
May 26th, 2011, 04:52 AM
I thought I was going to be short too! Some must have gotten stuck together or the "Momma, Momma, Momma" chant threw me off. Apparently I counted accurately when I cut, so I didn't have to drag it all out for one more, but the fear was there. Thankfully you have some material leftover! THAT would be worse.

You can do it! You are almost done!

I am so thrilled for my first swap! What does everyone do with theirs? Make it and give away, keep for yourself? I was thinking of maybe being able to make 2 smaller quilts and give to quilts for kids. Will have to see them first and figure it out! Thanks ladies!:D

Mine was originally supposed to be for my granddaughter who is going to be 13 in the fall. She is animal crazy. But she is more into snakes, spiders and other little critters. We'll see. I'll figure it out. I probably won't want to give it up. LOL! I can't wait to see the blocks all together though. Think we can have a peak?

With this one, I'll have 6 swap quilts to deal with. #6 is the Wild Thing swap. #5 is the Christmas version of the Around the World Quilting Bee, and still on it's way to me. #4 needs two more Disappearing 9 Patch blocks to make it a usable size (haven't made those up yet). I have #3 ready as a completed top for my Mom. #2 is my Halloween quilt like Mom's but is still in blocks. Finally#1 is my first Around the World Quilting Bee set of blocks.
I will eventually complete all of them. Two of them are seasonal and I'll probably rotate them. The Halloween quilts were doubled up on purpose as Mom LOVES to decorate for the holidays and I thought it would be fun for her bed. The scrappy D9P will probably be used as a practice quilt for some free motion quilting and end up as a quilt for either the car or the barn. My ATWQB blocks will be made into a keeper quilt for sure. I made some good friends with that group of ladies. It will be nice to have as a couch quilt for myself.
I have learned a lot since I started swapping. I don't join unless I have a feel for the swappers anymore. That D9P was a real disappointment. Some of the blocks looked like anything that could be sewn together was. I certainly don't expect $10/yd fabric, but I think some of this is questionable as 100% cotton. It will make a fine quilt for keeping in the car or a barn quilt for those late nights/early mornings waiting for babies to be born.
I have found I prefer to attach a person to the block instead of just getting a pile of blocks in the mail. I like the connection to the maker. The Wild Thing quilt will most likely be made to take with me on our girl trip in January. It can get a little chilly on the coast at that time of year. Even if I am still quilting it, I can snuggle under it while I stitch!
I can hardly wait to get them back so I can start playing with how to lay them out! I haven't made a quilt with all different sized blocks before. I like the look of them, but haven't tried one until now!

I DID IT! I DID IT! I finished all 27 blocks. WOW! I can't believe I did it. Talk about slow and steady wins the race. I've been working on these off and on since the swap started. All I need to do now is sign them (need to find the right pen) and get them in the mail.

I do have a pic of my block in the group pics. Any suggestions on where to get a pen that won't bleed through? What brand?

Lisa, I got the pen I used from JoAnnes. However, I was extremely disappointed in it. I had done a previous block that asked for the signatures to be in brown ink. The only brown JoAnnes had was in a package with other colors. Unbeknownst to me, they were extremely fine and may have even been old and drying out. I had a most difficult time with them. If they hadn't been so expensive I would have thrown them in the trash.

Do you have a Hobby Lobby or Michaels around? Or an art supply shop.

Here's Suzi's instructions on signing the blocks: Thank you for the reminder about signing the blocks sandy (you must be getting ready to send off? LOL)

FOR THIS SWAP we will sign the blocks on the BACKSIDE OF THE BLOCKS ....... there is already so much going on with these that i feel it would be disruptive to the beautiful patterns to sign on the front. IF someone after receiving wants to copy the info to the front - that is up to her Please be sure to use a pigma (or similar) pen so it will not bleed through. also, You are welcome to attach a small note to your block for swapping but please use a small safety pin not a straight pin to attach it

Lisa, I use either a Micron Pigma or a Millennium by Zig pen. Either have worked well for me. You can find them in the scrapbooking section. They are usually sold individually there. (If I can't buy the pens singly and check the freshness of the pen, I take the packet to the sales clerk and ask that they watch while I open it and test to make sure they aren't all dried up.) I wouldn't buy anything smaller than .05 for writing on quilts. I have an .08 that makes broader lines, but can be harder to fit into small spaces. I'd practice first to get the hang of writing on fabric. Hold your fabric down tight with your finger tips. Sometimes it is easier to break up the the letters into segments to work with the grain of the fabric for a good signature. If you are still having problems, you can iron a piece of freezer paper to the fabric for stiffness. The freezer paper trick works better when you are signing on the front of the quilt block though.
For this block, I wrote on the seam allowances. That way the ink would not bleed through the fabric thicknesses.
Congrats on completing the blocks!
Cathy

Lisa, I used an envelope that I bought from a local business supply office. I think the PO envelopes would be great, too. Don't forget a self-addressed stamped one to return (I did and had to send Suzi another . . . duh).

I use the heavier envelopes the P.O. sells. Not he padded job, but the one that is a bit stiff.
so far, I've had good luck with them holding up in the mail. The Tyvek ones will do a good job too. (Tyvek is the papery plastic material.) The P.O. usually only has those for the priority mail though. Business supply/office supply might have a wider selection.
