A request has been made that we have a section to post sewing room photos. I know there are several threads with pictures buried in the site already, but they get hard to find. So, from now on, post them here. I will make this thread sticky so it is always at the top of the Sew Together Far Apart section and easy to find.

SewBee ~ I noticed in your sewing room photos a 'Big Shot' die cutting machine and FABRIC being cut out on it! I have a cuddle-bug and some sizzex big dies that I would LOVE to use for cutting fabric shapes. . . my question [yes, I really do have a question} is this: Do you do anything to prep your fabric before cutting it on the dies or do you just run it through?

Sandy what a fabulous space!!!
I think i like this one even better, and i know this has helped you "clean out" and downsize...never a bad thing... trust me...
That being said,,, i am off to sew like a mad woman... making up stuff with all the "scraps" i just could not part with"...
Nice to put a "face on Al".... he sure has talent!!!! Seems you both are creative and so busy people!!:)

Oh my !! How I envy all of you with all the space you have to create in.
I have to make do with a dinning room table for cutting and putting my machine on to be able to sew !
When I need to add the backing, I'm on my knees on the floor but I need to move the table and chairs to create the space.
I'm not going to show any photo's I would be embarrassed !
Your quilting areas are a dream, no wonder there are so many lovely ones created.

Eileen I know what you mean! I am fortunate to have a small "mom cave" to call my own! But the space is quite small. I too have to use the dining room table for anything larger than a wall hanging, and all my trimming and backing is done on the kitchen floor! :)

Boy do I understand! Small spaces are certainly better than NO spaces. I had a preschool in my basement; was 'voted off the island' by my DH and kids as they wanted to create a "Man Cave" so I retired. I got to keep my 10 book cases which are filled with my children's book collection, and I have a tiny little corner behind the sofas and recliners that I still call mine. This is where my sewing/cutting/and 'everything else crafty' space is on one solitary table. I also kept the under the stairs closet and a tiny corner of an unfinished room that all the boys weight lifting equipment is stored. Into these little spaces I have ALL my sewing and card-making/scrapbooking supplies.[and I have WAY TOO MUCH of those last mentioned supplies!] * * *But, it is MY SPACE and I love it!

Eileen, I am 56 and just got a sewing room a few month ago. I have sewn since I was 5 years old, most of it done on the kitchen table. I decided to dismantle one of 3 bedrooms and make it into a sewing room. We didn't use it that much anyway. It is a very small room, but it works. You. Are. Not. Alone.

The first one is my $10 estate sale bargain........my cutting table with one half folded down. I like having the option of using part of or the whole table. The table is at the opposite end of the room but it works for me.

This is my Fon's & Porter design wall......my newest purchase. I like it & can stand back across the room to look at my project. These are blocks I am working on for the background on my aunt's quilt. I plan to applique amaryllis on it.

I have my cutting mat by my machine right now for trimming all the little blocks on my design wall.

Here is my fabric stash, books & other quilting stuff. I haven't spent very much on my stash........a lot of it was from estate & garage sales. Now I have a good assortment of fabrics........that includes some beautiful batiks that Lonna & Cyndi have sent to me! I have my fabrics sorted by color.....batiks in separate box. Scraps are organized by color in ziploc bags. And one box with a few precuts.

50464

This is how I arranged my fabric........when I take the lid off the box I can see everything. Now I just need to figure out where to put hang my rulers.....

I would like to know about the lamp over your sewing machine and the square ironing board. Thanks.

There are two laps, both are Ott Lights. The black one is their origianal (does that tell you how long I have been doing this) and it is still on its origianl light bulb and the lighter colored one, I picked up at Joann's a couple of years ago on a 50% off sale.

The square ironing board - your gona laugh. It is a regular ironing board underneath, but it is a mesh metal shelf from Ikea. It origionaly had 2 layers of batting and then was covered by wool suiting. When we moved, I recovered it because the wool suiting was in bad shape, and I added 3 layers of batting (warm and natural) and the cover is made out of repro feedsack yardage.

It is 46 inches wide, and 22 inches deep, plenty of room to do just about anything, including ironing a shirt!

Ok, I'm done (for now) organizing fabric. So, here is my sewing room. Ignore the carpet, you know how it is. I only put cuts of fabric a yard or more on the comic book boards. I have smaller pieces stashed here there and everywhere else! I'll come up with something for them eventually. Mostly on the bookshelf is what I got from that Estate Sale I went to. So anyway, here ya go:

I thought I would go ahead a post some pictures of my work space, though it is still a work in progress. I'd like to brighten it up a little bit. Maybe change out my window treatments or something. The 2 women in the picture are in Honduras. They are learning to sew. As you all can see, I still have a whole wall for shelving and pretties. I've still not begun using the closet in my room, but will eventually.

We have a small garden room which my husband has just finished making into a sewing area for me, my sewing table is his old desk sanded and painted. The merchant chest belonged to my son who was getting rid of it so my husband brought it home and renovated it in the same way. The room has half glass walls on two sides so it gets lots of natural light. My fabric is stored in the drawers to protect it. I'll be using it for the first time tomorrow - it certainly won't look so neat and tidy after that but it'll be nice not to have to move everything off the dining room table when we want to eat! My son has cut and sanded a piece of plywood for me ready to make an ironing pad and I've bought a 18"x24" cutting mat which fits nicely on top of the chest and is a good height. For large things I'll still have to use the large mat on the dining room table. I'm so pleased with it and wanted to share.54385

I don't have a room, but this is where I sew. It is one side of our office. I also do all of my schoolwork (Accounting student) at my desk on another wall. I cut on the Kitchen table, and have 4 Add-a-Mats that hook together to cover the whole surface. One day I hope to have a room and a LAQ.

Hey There! Glad I was poking around and noticed your comment. First, thanks for the compliment :) Now, the clip on lamp I got at walmart. I have also been wrapping my fabric on mini bolts and discovered in this forum actually how much more economical wrapping the fabric on comic boards are and they fit in the 2gallon bag (ziploc, hefty). The reason i started storing my fabric was because in our last home i only had room to keep my fabric in the same room as our cat's litter boxes were. So that just was not a good mix in my mind litter dust, stinkyness and my fabric! Now my sewing room is fresh and in the open and I've taken the majority of the fabric out of the bags to "breathe" i guess ~someone here said it was a good idea to do that. But i do keep the fabric that is close to the floor in bags.

Thanks....I am looking for clip on lamps like that not only for my sewing room, but I make craft videos and want some lighting for that. DH suggested using his "shop" clip on lamps....but they are soooo ugly ( in my opinion ! ) .....He did take a shop-light ( the ones with the fluorescent tube bulbs in them ) and he "hung" the shop light on a wall close to one of my long tables ( I have friends come in to craft ) ....and by doing that, it lights up the room BIG TIME.....you can see everything !!! A lot of my friends love love love to come over to use my room, despite the fact that a couple of them have huge sewing / craft rooms ( my room is 12 x 12 ) but the lighting isn't as good in their rooms they claim. That's okay, I love the company....!!!!

You ladies have some wonderful spaces to sew.

I'm hoping to post some pictures of mine someday but I need to get a new camera first. The old one died and we just have not got a new one yet. We actually went to get one the other day but it started snowing like all get out so we turned around and came back home since we live in the country and our snow removal is not the best in this area.

My sewing space is nothing fancy but it is all mine and I love it.

I also plan on posting pictures of some of my projects also.

Hmmmm I have about the same amount of fabric. I have packed most of it away because I am trying to re-do the craft room. One of the good things about having all the fabric packed away ? I get to go buy MORE !!! YAY!
( DH said the other day when I came home from the fabric store " What's in all those totes in the middle of the room I am re-painting ?" I smiled and said " Fabric of course ! I really needed some more thread, and I found some fabric for new pillowcases too."
As I walked past him he said " Oh, By the way, the UPS guy just dropped off a box too, and said his wife orders from that same company too ( MSCQ)."
Of course, I just smiled.....

Dayna,
It's an allusion......we are repainting the house because we are considering a move to an independent retirement community. Once we move, and if we like it there, the house goes up for sale. If not, the house will be freshly painted etc. for us to move back in. Right now, a lot of my craft ( paper ) and my sewing things are being boxed up to take with us.....We don't plan on moving until spring.
It's amazing the way I have "spread" out here in the house.....I have taken over the youngest son's bedroom ( what DH is painting ) for my crafts.....prior to that, I just had a desk in the living room that I used for my crafts, and right now, I am back to using that desk again while the room is being painted.

I have shuffled stuff around in my room to make space for 2 additional machines. I like having them out, in their own space, ready to be used when I want to use them! I had to get an extra table for my Rocketeer, and I found one with a shelf to hold the scan n cut. I need to get some newer pictures!
The big table in the middle of the room fits either of my Pfaff Creatives, I just switch them out according to which I feel like sewing on. My serger lives under the table. And my Sashiko machine is currently homeless and has been living downstairs next to the dining room table.

This weekend we found a corner of my own in our little apartment.
I am very happy! But the walls now look boring and white and too much empty space. I hung up a mini quilt/mug rug I just made for a friend. I don't know how do swaps get organized around here. I am new to this world, but I would LOVE to swap mini quilts or wall decoration. I have a problem when I make things I feel the compulsive need to give them away and make someone happy instead of keeping it for myself, but I would keep it if it was given and made from someone else.

Is anyone interested in helping me decorate my wall and swapping mini quilts/wall decor?
:)

Finally finished reorganizing my sewing room,,, now I know where everything is. I'm so glad to have a room of my own after 40 years of sewing on the dining room table. It's not a large room, only 11' by 12' most of it is taken up by Bertha the long arm, but it works. :)
And a bonus,, I found 4 more UFOs. LOL
Here are some pics,,,

Wow!!! So jealous of all your beautiful rooms/spaces!!

I have a "craft cave" as hubby calls it, but it is wall-to-wall furniture and floor to ceiling storage in my closet. Since I do so many crafts, there is a LOT packed into one small room.

With the hopes of a baby soon, Hubby and I decided to love my "Craft Cave" back downstairs to the master bedroom (we use a smaller bedroom upstairs) so that my current room which is right across the hall from our bedroom can be turned into a nursery. The master bedroom is much bigger than my current room and hopefully I won't be cramped anymore. That room is currently our spare bedroom, but has turned into the "I don't know where to put it so I'm going to dump it in here" room. As soon as we get it all cleaned out and the carpet shampooed, we're going to make the move of my craft room back downstairs.

If I can muscle up the energy to clean up my current room, I'll snap some pics and share :D. All these wonderful pictures shares here have given me some ideas of how to organize my room!!

I sew on the dining room table too. I have storage space for sewing in the closet in my home office. The home office would have space for a sewing station, but if I sewed in there, I know I would sew too much & work too little. It's best for me if work space is really only for work. And furthermore, when it is OK to be sewing, I don't have a pile of unfinished, guilt-inducing work sitting right in front of me. The only problem is when we have company and we actually want to eat at the dining room table ....

Those rooms are far too neat for me... but I did get myself into a better working order a while back with encouragement from gals here! No going to click a picture of how it is "right now",,, but it's much easier to bring back to ship shape when necessary... (Define necessary....??? When I trip over something, or knock something over more than 5 times...LOL)

A little before and after:)

Yesterday and today were the days that I actually cleaned and reorganized my sewing room. I need more comic book cards and I see quilts on the walls in my future. Maybe one day I will repaint, but it's fine with the blue that it is right now. I also plan to cover the cushion for my chair and make a pillow. Thanks for looking!

This is the first time that I have been on here even though I have been a fan for a very long time of MSQC! I am going to attempt to upload some pics of my sewing room. It's a work in progress as I have recently remarried and I was blessed to be able to have a whole loft upstairs for my room. It still needs to be painted, it was all open and is now closed in and we put double doors on the room to keep the cat out during the day...he loves to pull the spools of thread off of the racks and carry them downstairs and wrap thread around the legs of the kitchen table and chairs!90746907479074890749

Wow, what eye candy. These are sew inspiring. Perhaps IF I paint mine I "may" have enough nerve to share a photo. It is simply an old park model trailer. What once was the bedroom (with popout) and the "living" area and popout house my sewing materials.

I'm going to go through the pics. Maybe there is some design idea I can incorporate to make my area use space better.

Guess I haven't visited this thread in awhile! I didn't know we had a sewing room sticky.

Here's my sewing room. It's actually looking a bit tidier now that I have yellow inserts in every spot. I didn't at first realize that having the inserts in (only) every other space would be sew untidy looking.

122869

When I took this photo, my sewing machine was on a desk behind me. Since I retired from church music, I grabbed a wall in the musical instrument room and set up my three sewing machines against that wall. Did I mention that I can watch TV from there? The other unintended consequence was marvelous. I own my own business, and my sewing room was also half office. I could never sew without feeling like I ought to be working. With the sewing machines two rooms away, I now feel like I'm getting AWAY from work while I'm sewing. It's done wonders for my productivity.

Hope this works... I've gone from a closet , to half the room, to ALL the room, here in my retirement home... at 66,,, i'm getting everything I ever wanted...it's not a huge space so I make the most of it...if God forbid i'm ever alone here... the whole place will be "about sewing and handwork"... as soon as you walk thru the door!!!!! http://forum.missouriquiltco.com/members/grammababs-albums-strictly-about-storage.html

I am alone here, and am in the process of taking over the two extra bedroims... One will be my sewing space.... I'll keep the things I use all the time in there. It will be my "cozy" place to retreat to...complete with a comfy chair for reading... The other, larger room, will be a guest room, where I will have my big cabinet I use for storing batting and other things I seldom use, plus tubs of fabrics, my ironing board, Etc.... ... I keep a TV tray ironing space by my sewing a table...

The larger room used to be my sewing room, but I had to move everything into my DR room for a few months... My don and his family lived here while their new house was being built... They are gone now, and I'm ready for a change.... We're moving things today.... I hope... I'll post pics when I get things organized...

Just so happens I cleaned my craft room today.... I had been using my daughter's dresser to hold everything, but it turns out she needed it more. So, had to clean everything out and find something else to put it all in - my grandmother's dry sink was able to hold most of my stuff (it has been in every room in my house now). My husband just looked in when I was taking a few photos to upload, he wanted to know where all of my "junk" went - I informed him that I do not have junk. :icon_hi:

I'm off to have a moan in my husbands ear ! LOL
I must remember to but a Lottery ticket today ........................................fingers crossed !

I smile to know: that you are quilter, that you have a home to keep you warm and a table on which to eat with chairs for family or friends, and good knees to be able to get up and down on the floor to enjoy your hobby, and a husband to share your life with.

My hubby and I bought 2 lottery tickets yesterday. I hope you and we win! :icon_wave:
