After 6 weeks of waiting for my insurance to play nice, then waiting for an appointment to open up, I finally got in to see the specialist today about my poor Achilles tendon. He checked me out thoroughly, had his technician take some x-rays, then reviewed them with me. I'm impressed that he was so thorough and that this process didn't take three different appointments!

The Achilles Tendon comes down and attaches itself to the small, flat bone on the back of the heel, then all the individual fibers of the tendon spread out and wrap around the heel on all sides. When I initially injured my tendon, it's most likely that one or more of those little fibers on the right side of my right foot pulled loose. Right now, that connection point is still very inflamed and is the source of my continued pain. The x-rays show I have a bone spur (this is easily seen as a large bump on the back of my heel). Just above the spur are about a dozen small calcifications -- essentially pieces of free-floating bone that have formed -- that have embedded themselves into the tendon. This is the area where the tendon should be firmly attached to my heel. Because of all those calcifications, it doesn't have a firm attachment, and the entire tendon is compromised and weakened.

Doc gave me a number of exercises to do and encouraged me to keep taking ibuprofen and icing it on a regular basis. I go back in two weeks. If things appear to be improving, great. If not, Doc says we'll have to operate. He would gently lift the tendon, scrape away the bone fragments and the spur, then staple the tendon back in place. Recovery time for that is 2 - 3 months.

It's nice to know exactly what's going on and to know what the plan of attack is. Just wish I could have gotten in to see him sooner.

I feel your pain!!! I have been living with that since last October myself. It has just been in the past couple weeks that I have started wearing shoes w/backs on them again. I have to wear an insert in that shoe, regardless if it's a clog or a shoe. I was in an ortho boot from the middle of October to February, 24 hrs a day. Once I was out of that, they gave me the exercises which I do faithfully. The stretching is good, and also freezing a water bottle and rolling it back and forth on the floor with your foot...that feels amazing!

The last time I saw him, I thought he was going to schedule surgery, because that is what we had talked about at the previous appointment....oh no! He gave me a cortisone shot right in the bottom of my heel! I have spurs (two of them on the heel bottom and another where yours is) and the ones on my heel were causing severe plantars faciitis. The shot seems to have calmed that down a lot, but it was awful getting it and I had to be off work for three days after. I could not walk without crutches.

It still feels like there is a little man in my foot slicing at the back of it with a knife, but either it's not as bad or I am getting used to the pain. I think I'm getting used to the pain. He does not want to do surgery because of the long recovery time and he seems to think what we are doing will work, but there is no way those spurs are going away on their own, and they are each 1/2 inch long.

If you do have surgery, I'll be interested to hear how that goes.

Oh my gosh! What a long time to wait, but understandable that you had to wait it out. Having to pay out-of-pocket for these expensive doctors and procedures is a hard pill to swallow. So glad you got in to finally see someone. Hopefully, you will start feeling some relief with his plan of attack. If not, 2-3 months recovery will be worth it if it fixes the problem and takes away the pain. Keep us posted.

Prayers that the PT helps and you don't have to have the surgery. Hang in there hun.

DUH, why didn't I think of that one! I have my own"stupid foot" (a severe ankle sprain x 2 and now OA) and ice seems to be the best pain reliever out of everything!

So the rolling exercise + ice, o yeah! Again, why didn't I think of that!

I am sitting here with my toes curled up - that sounds so painful! Glad that there is a plan of attack to get it healed. Praying that the therapy will at least relieve the pain and hopefully let you avoid surgery. Physical therapy can do wonders. I'll have to pass on the frozen water bottle trick - a lady I work with has the plantars faciitis. Bubba, praying yours heals soon too! Lisa

I'm so glad to hear that you know exactly what's going on inside your foot. After seeing the x-rays you can probably visualize the whole thing. I really hope you won't need surgery and that exercises work. Well, someday you'll have to have that bone spur taken care of, but that by itself shouldn't be too big of a problem. I'll continue praying for you!

Hi Meli!

I am glad you finally got to see a doctor. Isn't it horrible to wait ages for the insurance to react .... I don't even wanna imagine. But now that you know what's wrong you can finally get the correct treatment. And yay for your doctor to not take advantage and make 3 appointments out of 1! We need more of these.

If the exercises help you, that's good. Surgery is always a trouble but if it's the better way in your case, I'd go for it. Being in pain is horrible. I am so sorry you still have to endure this. But on the bright side, it seems you're finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel! I will keep you in my thoughts and hope you recover quickly! (Or if you have to take the surgery: that those 3 months pass quickly!) :)
