I used to love that when I was a kid! Apples are expensive here, but I could handle a half batch. Maybe for Christmas. Hope someone has a good recipie!

Hi, I make apple butter all the time.
Basically it's just a cooked down apples with added sweeteners and spices. The trick is to cook out most of the liquid until the consistency is thick which is where the word butter comes from. It can be made with peaches, pears, and other fruits too.
Honey pear is just divine!
Lots of recipes are out there for it. I make mine in a crock pot, similar to the recipe Lorie linked to above, however I don't use nearly as much sugar and I cook mine longer. It concentrates the flavor and reduces the need for for a lot of sugar.
Apple butter lends itself to being able to use different sweeteners too. I use brown sugars, splenda, maple syrup, and honey.

Sonic how long does it stay good for if you put them in little jars? Iv'e never canned anything before.

If you put the hot butter into hot jars, then let cool on the counter for a few hours, it will make a pseudo seal that will make it possible to keep the butter for months (unopened) in the fridge. I have done this.
Whenever I make it, there is always some left over that won't fill a jar to the proper amount for regular water bath canning, so this is what I do. (jams too)
I've forgotten about them until much later when I'm digging for something.
Once opened it usually last for several weeks, like regular jelly.
When canned normally (water bath) it will last on the shelf for years.![]()

All that information is great thanks. We have an apple day at an historic property with orchards and you can buy the apples for £1 a bag. I usually buy quite a few bags and use them for pies in the winter but I think I'll make apple butter this year for little Christmas gifts if it keeps that well.

My mom always kept apple butter in the fridge. I imagine most grocery stores still carry it in the section where the jams and jellies are stored. It's actually quite yummy on cottage cheese. When I was a kid we ate it on buttered toast. Delicious.

I sometimes use cinnamon candies in place of the cinnamon and sugar. Gives the apple butter a reddish color with just the right amount of cinnamon.

God, Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The stash to make a quilt to help me cope,
A quilt to give to comfort those I love in times of hurt, fear and uncertainty.
And the courage to keep on sewing when life itself seems held together by a single thread of hope.
I love apple butter! Had it all the time as a kid. Now I'm hungry for it! I'll put it on my grocery list for next week.
