Bringing Backing to Quilt Front

Hi all.....
I am quite new to this forum information highway !! Please bear with me....I am newly retired & am trying to finish up my UFO's started long ago......I am rather rusty on my quilting abilities.....I am wanting to finish off a quilt by bringing the backing to the quilt front.....I have looked for tutorials on this ...but am finding only traditional quilt binding tutorials....Any suggestions ???

Hi Sally! Did you want to fold your backing over to make your binding? I do this all the time... I eyeball it, fold the fabric under to give me a nice straight edge, and then machine sew the backing to the front of the quilt.

Yes....I plan to fold the backing over....But how much should I fold over.....Once to hide the raw edge & then again to get the nice straight edge ?? And what about my corners ?? Thanks for responding....I kinda feel out in left field right now !!

Yes, once to hide the raw edge and once more. Corners are easy - I always do my sides first, then my top and bottom. After your sides are done, and you trim the top and bottom backing to the right size, it'll fold right over and the top and bottom will go right over the sides... wish I felt like I was explaining this better! Hope it helps!

you shouldn't have a raw edge. cut strips 2 1/2 in wide press in half with iron. sew that raw edge to the quilt and then your folded edge will go to the back or front depending on which you prefer and sew down. I am pretty sure Jenny did a tut on this if not you could find one on youtube

Oh make sure you sew those strips together before you fold them in half. I sew them at an angle but you could straight sew them if you want. Have you seen the binding tool tutorial? That tool is amazing. I love it.

Hi Sallybear I did a quick search and I found this tutorial. It looks nice and clear and shows how to make nice neat mitred corners. Hope it helps x

If I'm not mistaken, Jenny did a tutorial on finishing binding with a sewing machine. I just watched it recently. She sews the binding on the back and brings it around to the front. I know it's not quite what you're wanting to do, but just thought it might help ya out a little bit...
