Default Gone crazy for the Lorax!

I guess I went crazy for the Lorax when the different precuts were on DD, because I ended up with charm packs and a jelly roll. I have a member of my family who loves the Lorax story, and I wanted to make something for her using the fabric. What to make?

Well, I also have fallen in love with the Falling/Tumbling charms pattern, because it is so easy to make and turns out cute. So, I made one qult using Lorax charm squares and white. It will get borders and backing and cute quilting, but right now it looks a bit plain. So, I thought, what can I do with the jelly roll, using this pattern?

So, I dug out my many Robert Kaufmann Kona Charm square packs, in the many colorways that they come, pulled out solid charms that matched the colors in the jelly roll, and made a reverse falling/Tumbling charm top, using solid charms bordered with the printed jelly rolls! I had to have some sort of order in my brain, so I chased one color jelly roll diagonally across the quilt, and was able to do this because of the number of jelly rolls for some of the prints were 3, instead of two. It is busy, I know, but colorful and I think it will be fun when it is bordered and quilted. Right now, it is just blocks, I need to take a break from it and maybe work on it later tonight or tomorrow.

Here they are--two ways to do Falling/Tumbling charms (which name is the real name, anyway?)

Jean, they are both adorable! I got the jelly roll and still haven't decided what I am doing with it. I had thought about a "reverse" Falling Charms - I really like how yours turned out!

They are both amazing. I love them and it is Falling Charms but I think tumbling sounds great too!

What a clever idea, Jean! They're both so darling...the first one is tumbling and the second one appears to be floating. You did a great job!

The reverse one gives a totally different look to the quilt top. It's hard to see it is the same pattern. Was it harder to keep things straight as you laid it out?

I think the charms appear to be more tumbling than falling. But Jenny calls it both.

No, it wasn't hard to keep them straight, because I laid them out in diagonal rows, instead of straight across rows. I used the same outer border on the ones that formed the diagonal rows. They all were oriented the same way if you go from top to bottom diagonally. Besides I had to count how many I needed of each color to do the diagonal match, I needed 7 blocks using the same color for the long diagonal runs (4 runs of 7) then two each of 6,5,4,3,2,and 1. I had to select my fabrics carefully as I built the array diagonally to make sure the colors went together well. It was almost easier to make it work by bulding the array that way then by doing it in rows.

I did have to think this through before I started, and I had the finished top to look at and could count blocks so I could see how many of each I needed to make. It was fun to do!

Very cute and colorful. This pattern is really quick and I like your clever idea of using the solid blocks with the jellyroll strips. Gives it a totally different look. I think they're both amazing!

Jean, Jean Sewing Machine! You make me tired! lol

You are so flippin' fast!!! I can't even keep up with you just reading about all your quilts.

I'm still unpacking, ironing, hanging my stash...

They are both adorable! I have been given a lot of scraps/small yardage by folks for my NICU and PICU quilts and I can really see how this pattern can be a great one to use with solids to use them up with. Keep the layouts coming.
