I just made my two grandsons each a pirate quilt using the double slice layer cake pattern. Jelly roll quilts are very easy and lots of fun to make. For the squares, you could do a simple scrappy patch array, maybe 7 across and 10 down, then borders around the center part. Look at auntiemern's post the cutest one of all, she used a pattern like that only square, it turned out darling.
