Suggestions for border colors....please!
I made this jelly roll quilt yesterday. It's a little bit small for a full size bed and I need to add a border or borders for a better fit. I'd like suggestions for border colors. There's lots of brown, green, orange, red, yellow, and teal in the strips. It doesn't show well in the pic, but the lightest strips in the quilt are actually "Creamsicle" orange background with yellow print.
I'm going to have to buy fabric. I used every possible inch of the jelly rolls to make the quilt and Hobby Lobby doesn't have any more of the fabric. Thanks for your input!!

Wow, Myrna! I'd say pick a color any color! My instinct would be to put an orange inner border, surrounded by a brown outer border, size to be determined by how much extra width you need to add. It looks plenty long. That is a stunner! I love it, but I love any jelly roll quilt!

Thanks Jean! It was your instructions that I used to make the quilt bigger and they worked like a charm! The Hobby Lobby jelly rolls only had 10 different fabrics in them but I like how they turned out when stitched together. And they were bought with coupons so I have bargain quilt here!

Glad it worked out! Do you cover your pillows? I always make pillowcases instead of covering the pillows with quilts.. If you buy an extra yard of eack of your border colors, you could make some wild cuffed pillowcases for this wild bed! I love color, and this is really colorful!

Very nice!! i think a nice tone on tone cream or even a white would frame very nicely and not take away from the center :)

My vote is for the brown and orange borders. Beautiful job.

WOW! Love the colors! I cast my vote for the brown and orange, also!

You know, Orange runs among my very favorite colors. However, when I first looked at the quilt I picked up on a green small border with more of a blue one (or teal) for the outer border, thus toning it down a bit. I am a firm believer that you make a quilt with your favorite colors so it blends with your furnishings.
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
If you need to buy fabric at a quilt shop, take the quilt with you. It's a lot easier to audition fabrics when you have it with you. The shop employees will be more than happy to help you choose.
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
Denis, I'll take the quilt to the local store where I buy fabric. It's actually a discount store that has everything from plumbing supplies to sporting goods to quilt fabric. They got lots of great new fabric a couple of weeks ago...I know they had some orange fabric! Thanks for all the suggestions !!
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
See the strip at the bottom that looks like an orange siscle color ( at least on my monitor and with my eyes) that one and green that goes with the ones that are just above it next to the stripes.... hope this helps. kellie
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
Yes it's a lovely quilt. I agree too with hauling it off to the quilt shop as the staff there may introduce you to some colors that you hadn't thought of.. Also your decor comes into play too... Hope to see pics of what you end up with...
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
I agree with what Sandy and Denis suggested! There are so many colors in there. I'm assuming the colors of the quilt already go well in the room so I would look at the fabric and decide which fabric/color in the quilt grabs your eye. Which fabric do you just love. Go with that fabric and try to find something that works with it in that same color. If you can't find anything go on to your next favorite and so on. Taking the quilt, as Denis suggested, is going to make the search a lot easier.
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
If this beautiy were mine, I would take it to my quilt shop and looked for fabrics that pick up and blend with your lovely colors. There are marvelous (and not so expensive) Kona cottons or the lovely batiks to make your borders.
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
I'm thinking of red. Be nice if for the sash, a diagonal stripe similar to what's there and finish with a red binding or the reverse of that. At least I think I'm seeing a red in there and a stripe on the bias would work. But then again, I'd have to take it to the shop with me to be sure about any choice.
Re: Suggestions for border colors....please!
I think something like a narrow orange sash, followed by a brown border might work and that diagonal stripey one would make a fabulous binding. Like others have said - it might be good to take the quilt with you to the fabric shop and try a selection of colours

Wow! I love this jelly roll quilt! It's just beautiful! Great job! I too like the thought of orange and brown but am wondering if it would become more of a "fall" looking quilt then? It's so many great colors in it and I agree with Sandy that some green and blue would also be lovely. I guess it just depends on the look you're going for!
Also, where are these instructions from Jean Sewing Machine about how to make one bigger? Would love to know! THANKS!
