Panel Quilt

I can't, for the life of me, figure this out. I'm making a couple of quilts for my granddaughters which use panels that measure 44x24. Does anyone have a pattern that can make these panels into a pretty quilt? I'd like the size to be somewhere between a lap and a twin quilt. I'm horrible at calculating so I need a pattern that will tell me exactly what to do. The panels must stay intact and there are about five coordinating fabrics that i can use for the top. Thanks for any help you can give me.

What a darling panel! I am making it my mission to figure out ways to adorn panels and make them into cute quilts!

I have no pattern, but here's a couple of ideas, off the top of my head. You could do strips of the colors and apply multiple borders using all the colors, until it is the size you want it to be.

You could take the 5 colors and make squares and do a D9P border around it. This would take some calculations, and I could maybe figure it out if I knew the exact size of the panel.

You could put one border around the panel, then do a piano key border using all of the colors of your fabrics sewed together as a wide 4-5" border, then another regular border.

You could do half square triangles or pinwheels as blocks to build a border around it.

All of this requires some math to figure out how big of pieces to start with to make it end up exactly fit together. Without the size of the panel, it wouldn't be possible to calculate how big to make every block. The easiest to do, without a lot of difficult math calculation is the multiple borders.

Did you see the post about rulers that someone put on the forum yesterday? They give the exact way to measure squares to end up with a certain size block. I want to order the rulers just so I don't have to do the math. They look like you could create many things without overtaxing the brain.

Duh, I just saw that you DID post how big the panel is, let me work on it and try to help. How big do you want it to end up? How are you going to quilt them?

I figured something out for you. Can I PM you to tell you how you could get it to be 44" wide by 64" long? It would be adding borders and patches of borders to make it bigger. I'm trying to figure out how to make a D9P patch end up 4" square, haven't gotten that one done yet. Having to renew my 5th grade lessons in fractions, and that teacher was no good at teaching math, I've been bad at it ever since.

I've made many panel quilts. They're so fun and always turn out well. When I use a flannel panel I make a "rag quilt" border that goes around it and used batting in the panel part. I've always just sorta figured it out as I went, and it's always worked.

Please post pics when you finish. I would love to see what you do with these adorable panels!

I do it my making the borders larger than the quilt. Then I take the difference in measurements between the quilt and the pieced border. I make a regular border plus 1/2" for seams the length of the difference I got when I subtracted the quilt size from the size of the pieced borders. This is a quilt I'm working on. The second border of flying geese were made before the first little green border. That little green border filled in the difference between the quilt and the flying geese border. I hope that's clear.

Jeez Louise! My borders look wavy in the pic. It's just because I've got pins holding it in place. After just posting that tutorial on wavy borders I better not be showing you a quilt with waves. I haven't even washed out all the markings for the quilting. Yikes! Trust me! It's gonna be super duper when I'm finished! Hahaha!

Carolyn, that panel is so adorable! I haven't seen that one before. Whatever you do with it will be great, I'm sure.

Personally I would make a single small border 2 1/2" cut, which leave a 2' inch border once it is attached, around the quilt, then using the colors in the quilt, make strips that would be going the same direction of the stripes in the panel. Aslo cutting these at 2 1/2" and make them the length you want to get the width you need, then there really is no math involved. Just an idea though.

Marilyn, we share a brain! That's what I would do also!

Rebecca, what an adorable quilt you are making. Carolyn, I rarely make a pieced border. When I do, I adjust the squares downward until it fits. You can't see where one square is a tiny bit smaller than the others, especially if you adjust several blocks and not just one. This only works if you aren't off by much. I love Rebecca's idea of making a small border until it fits.

That is so cute! I just bought a panel with that same red and yellow bird. It's got a growth chart on the side of it, which I plan to cut off and just show the birds. I think that will be my next project. Perfect for hanging this time of year.

Thanks so much for your good advice. I'm waiting for Jean's math and then I'll figure out which method I'll use. (pieced or just borders.). The problem is that the panel is so skinny so I need to make up the width somehow.

I think your quilt looks adorable now, Rebecca! I get what you are saying but my problem is how skinny the width of the panel is. I feel that somehow I need to make it a little wider without making it longer than about 70". So any boarders ( ha ha, just kidding, Jean) cannot be equal in width. In other words, if I just double the whole quilt it will be a goofy 48"x80"

so would I.....keep adding strips until you get it to the size you want....add piano key borders to both sides to widen it and then add strips to finish it out

I'm with Lilmouse. Just add some borders to the sides first to get it closer to what you want. Then add one additional border just to the top and bottom. You don't have to have the same border/s on all four sides. Also if you do pieced borders only on the sides (to add interest) it'll be easier to figure out the sizing. Once those go on then you can cut plain borders for top and bottom. If you don't like that you can still add a plain border all the way around to frame it. I think I'd be brave and make some pieced borders for the sides. Then figure out what to do with the plain border after.

I just took another look at that panel. It really is darling! I wouldn't put piano keys on it. It's already got a stiped border. I think I might be tempted to do a border with appliqued flowers like the flowers in the panel. I'd try to make the additional borders look like it's part of the panel and flowers could definitely help with that. It would also add interest without having to add pieced borders. I might also consider getting some of the coordinating fabric that echoes some of the colors in the panel and something that looks nice with that stripe.

Thanks to all! It will be awhile before I start on these quilts, Daisy, because I'm working on a Super Mario quilt for their brother. I'll try to post when these cute bird quilts are finished. I'd love to see what you do with your panel too! I saw this line of fabric at a quilt show here in the Chicago area and fell in love. When you get your panel you will see that it is even prettier in person ( so to speak). The colors are much brighter!

Attachment 21402You will probably have to make the top and bottom borders different widths than the side ones. I had this problem. The panel is so much taller than it is wide, the quilt comes out disproportionate. (I hope that's a word) One way to settle it is to do like some have suggested - make a patchwork border, but I'd only put them on the sides. That will even it out. I love the suggestion Rebecca made about making the pieced borders, and then adding the separating border. I can't ever get my pieced borders to come out exactly right. That solves all the problems - take up the slack with a simple border - THANKS REBECCA! I've attached a picture of the one I did that had the long, skinny panel. Notice the top and bottom borders are much thinner than the side ones. You don't really notice it unless someone points it out. It's more drastic on the inner borders. The outer borders are about 1/2-1" different in width. You don't notice it at all.

Oh I remember this quilt from when you posted it awhile back. It's just lovely. Your idea is a good one but I think i would like to leave the panel intact this time. I'll keep yours in mind for another quilt! Thanks for your help.

I need to do this with a patchwok quilt that is too narrow for my queen bed, but plenty long. I'm going to add extra borders on the sides but not on the ends.
