So, I know this is simple, but with your 1/4 inch foot where do you line it up to be sure it's exactly 1/4 inch?
I measured mine seam after I sewed and it was more than 1/4 inch....Thanks!

put you pressure foot down and lower your needle and get a ruler. Place the 1/4 mark where the needle is. Wherever the end of the ruler is, that is your 1/4" mark.
Sometimes, you have to move the needle over to make it exactly 1/4". It all depends on the foot and the machine.
I'm a newbie too. Consistency is the key, I think...In quilting, they speak of a 'light 1/4 of an inch', and such....JEEZ. Im just trying to maintain 1/4 of an inch....If you line your fabric's edge at the outer edge of of your machine's foot, you should be GOLDEN!
As long as you're consistent, everything will line up! The cut and the press are also critical. I've had blocks go amok, only to find my press was off. It doesn't take much. I have the best results with pre-cuts. My cutting is a little off, and it probably doesn't help that I learned what I know from two lefties (YouTube and Craftsy tutorials). I'm retraining myself, regarding cutting, with Carol Doak's book 'Your First Quilt Book'. She addresses this in her book. LOVE my lefty mentors, all the same!
But accurate cuts are critical....
I have a machine that has 1/4" foot but it's not. The foot didn't come with the machine so the one I bought is too far to the rt of the needle. I finally got use to eyeing it for the 1/4, but I now also use painters tape to mark it.

Hi
I had the same problem at first. When I turn my sewing machine on, the needle is always in a position left from the middle, so that I always have to choose the middle before I start sewing.
The normal walking foot wasn't 1/4", so I bought a "Patchwork-foot" which is really 1/4". It works fine.

I put my rootbeer in a square cup.... now it's just beer
Thanks everyone! I feel like I'm learning so slowly because I don't have the time to quilt like I would like to. I rotate shifts and my time off is limited, but last night I got a lot done while the hubby was watching NBA basketball finals. I hope to get my first quilt finished soon. It sure has been a lot to take in. I'm being consistent so I hope it all works out in the end. And yes Sue, I'm using precuts. I wouldn't dream of taking on cutting the material right now, I would have a mess. Lol. Thanks again!
Some quarter inch foots have a fabric guide that feeds the fabric in correctly. Well, I say correctly, but I've never measured my seams to see if it is a true quarter inch. Like someone said, it doesn't matter so much if you are consistant. I say that, but then you may have trouble with your square rulers to square it up. Example, a 12 1/2 inch ruler might be too big if your block is only 12 inches.
