I just got a new quilting magazine and there is a pattern called "Pine Burr Made Modern". Has anyone ever done this pattern? It says skill level - advanced. It is soooo pretty! Not sure if I can do it - not yet anyhow.

What a pretty pattern! I googled it to take a look. It's definitely not for meant for a beginner. However, if you love it and you're up for a challenge go for it. Just take your time and read the instructions a couple of times before starting each step. Usually I cut out all my fabric and then build the blocks. In this case, if you're unsure about your ability don't cut out all of your fabric. Just cut out fabric for one block. That way if you decide it's too much for you to tackle you'll be able to use your fabric for something else.
I agree with Rebeccas-sewing -- if I'm not sure if 1) I have the skills to complete a new pattern or 2) I will like working on a pattern to complete a whole quilt then I cut one block out of scraps of fabric that I've saved and I sew a block or two. If all goes well then I get the fabric to make the quilt. Good luck with your pattern!
Oh wow that is pretty....but I'm not ready for something like that either.
Having never made one of these either, Kathy. I have found that most look more difficult than they actually are. Kind of reminds me of a pineapple block which is really quite easy, just time consuming.
And of yes, I agree with our Rebecca. I only cut out for one or two blocks if it is something I am uncertain of.
Hugs to you
Pine Burr is on my list. I saw one demonstrated on Fons and Porter and knew I had to to it (whne I use to subscribe to their network). Their pattern appeared in one on their supplemental magazines last year. I watched the video and it seemed a little tricky but doable if careful.
That's one thing I recommend to folks here is to subscribe to Fons and Porter online network. To get more for your bang, subscribe to QNN and Fons and Porter is included.
This block is a tiny bit similar but is paper pieced. I am bad at pp but was able to make a bunch of these. It's called Rattlesnake and the blocks can be positioned any way you want. It's just a thought.
I like that Cyndi, very colorful!

Cyndi that is AWESOME!
I also googled that pattern and at first glance was "whoooooooooaaa nooo!" Looks WAY beyond my skill set! If you do decide to tackle it I would love to see pics along the way.
I looked at the pattern and it is beautiful, but way to involved for me. I don't have the patience for anything like that.. LOL.
cyndi
thanks for the pp version; very similar
This is exactly what paper piecing is for! Beautiful! Good job!
Thank You all so much for all the good ideas and encouragement!!! I love this forum! Although, I will not be starting this any time soon as we are moving by the end of June. When/if I do it I will for sure post pics! Thanks Again!
