    Question Silly Question

Okay, I know that there are NO dumb questions!!! But I also know that there are silly questions...and this is one of them. Back when I first discovered quilting, fat quarter were all the rage!!! I bought them all the time!!! They only cost about $.99 per FQ so any extra money I had went to buying FQs!!! Now that I'm starting to spend more time quilting, some 15+ yrs later, I'm finding FQs in my stash that I've never unfolded. I bring them out and iron them before using them and have no problems. But my question is....can you leave fabric folded too long??? Will it ever get to the point where the folds wouldn't iron out???

I have had tremendous success ironing out folds in fabrics by spraying with Best Press and then steaming and pressing with the iron. Some of these fabrics are very old......from stashes of my mom's and my mil's. But.....that said....yes.....some folds can be permanent because the fabric is weakened or faded along the fold lines. This would be damage to the fabric itself from sunlight or improper storage. I know some of my fabrics date back to the 30's and 40's......so not just 15 years old!

Good to know and thanks Pam for asking the question.

I love "Best Press". I buy the lavendar scent. It works great!! Irons out those folds like you wouldn't believe. Pam, I also have fat quarters from many years ago and have not had a problem with them. Good luck to you. Piece and blessings, Vicki

I just "rediscovered" Best Press, mainly because my bottle of it was packed away in my costume fixing emergency kit from last fall. ( I've only costumed 3 shows since then without that kit!). I am loving the stuff and am using it in my pressing for quilts I'm working on now. It seems to do a great job.

I also like the best press....a problem I ran into with my older fat quarters was removing the sticky stickers they place on them and figured out that if it tears and you can't seem to remove it...iron on the other side with steam and it will peel right off

I love Best Press also but the Linen scent. I buy the larger bottle at Hancock Fabrics with a Joann coupon. I have not seen it at my Joann's and the LQS is toooo expensive! I do dilute mine though. I refill my smaller Best Press bottle just over 1/2 with the Best Press and then add water until the bottle is full. I get the exact same results if I had used it full strength! And the scent is still there. Makes it last a long time!!!

I've never bought Best Press, Hancocks didn't always have it, it was a bit pricey and where I live if you can't find it in Walmart its a thirty mile drive into town; but found that for my projects I had good results with Magic Sizing. I've had hoop marks left by the machine embroidery hoop that I couldn't iron out with just my steam iron but found when I used the Magic Sizing, I could see the marks disappearing even before I touched the fabric with the iron. And the same results with fabrics that have folded and stored for a long time. It's not Magic Starch but Magic Sizing, have picked up the wrong product by accident but soon realized it's not the same thing.

Lilmouse- What a great tip! As far as ironing out creases or any stubborn wrinkling, I keep a spray bottle of water by my iron. It's a lot cheaper than "Best Press." LOL
