Default Batting or no batting.. that's the question...

    Hello everyone

Now, that I've got my newest order from the MSQC, I'm eager to start my jeans-minkee-rag-quilt.

There I need some advice now.
Would you put some batting between the jeans and the minkee? or better not?

Thanks for reading - and answering

    Have a nice quilting-day
    Best wishes and Greetings

I don't think I'd use batting. I might consider flannel. I'd probably cut some squares and try a couple of combinations to see how it feels before making a decision - with batting, no batting, flannel batting. I might even go so far as using the longest basting stitch on my machine to run a couple of lines of stitching corner to corner to see what it will feel and look like with each choice. That way you can easily remove the stitches to save your materials.

I see lots of flannel ones made with batting. If making all flannel I'd probably follow that plan since folks are obviously having success.

I think it depends on how heavy and warm you want the quilt to be. Personally have never made one without using something in between. Flannel works really well, if you don't want it to be overly heavy. If I am reading this right you are putting denim (jeans) on one side and minky on the other. I would also go around each of these squares twice, for reinforcement, at your half inch seam. Just saying what I would do, but the final decision is yours to make.

Batting or no batting.. that's the question...-dsc_0143.jpgI made three rag quilts using flannel. They were for my grandchildren. I did not use batting, and they turned out wonderful.

    hello, thanks for the answers.
I got a "bag o'scraps" in my MSQC-order too, and it contained some flannel-scraps. The flannels are rather thin compared to the minkee charms, so if I would use flannesl, I'd put in a batting for sure.

Yes, Marilyn, you got that right. I want to do a rag quilt, with one side denim and the other minkee. -thanks for the tipp sewing around twice, that'll surely be better, I'll do that.

Wether I'll mix the sides when I put the pieces together or I make just one denim and one minkee side, i haven't decided yet.
I just want to start sewing the pieces together.
I'm collecting old Jeans from my daughters, their friends and DH and I'm not sure, that I have enough by now.
I think, I'll just do a few with batting, sewing with wide wide stitches, and decide then, thanks, Rebecca, that is really a good idea.

have a nice weekend you lot
    Best wishes and Greetings

Denim is pretty heavy, I doubt I would use a third layer.

I made a flannel rag quilt with the top, back and middle layer all out of flannel. It is very warm. With batting I think it would have been too heavy. The other one I made was out of cotton and I did us pieces of Warm and White between the layers.

The simple answer is do u want to make a quilt or a blanket. By definition a quilt has 3 layers. The top, the back and the batting or whatever you choose to put in the layers. I would use a lightweight flannel, to keep the weight down. JS, 2 layers would be considered a blanket, 3 a quilt. Not trying to be quilting police, but that is the difference.

I just made a small (baby) rag quilt from leftover pieces of flannel with only the top and bottom layers, no batting. It is the perfect weight for Texas weather!
