Twin size comforter or blanket?
So the measurement for a twin size quilt is 60x80. Is that the measurement for a quilt that is considered a "comforter"? or is that the size considered for a "blanket"? I want one for a comforter (bed spread) and one for the blanket on the bed and I dont' want the blanket to be larger than the comforter. I don't have a twin bed (yet) so I can't measure it!
Re: Twin size comforter or blanket?
First off a comforter is not the same thing as a bedspread.
Twin bedspread size (standard 21" drop) = 81' x 106"
Twin Quilt Size = 63" x 87"
Twin Comforter Size = 69" x 90"
If you will bookmark this site http://www.unitednotions.com/un_main...uides!OpenPage you will always have the measurements on hand.
Your bedspread size really should be measured on the bed you plan to use it on so you get the correct drop. The above are standard measurements and don't know how high your mattress might be.
Re: Twin size comforter or blanket?
I want to make a king size bedspread some day, maybe soon. I want it long enough to cover the pillows like old fashioned bedspreads did. I don't like to exposed pillow look, which to me looks like the bed is unmade. I got the size off of someone selling a real bedspread. I will likely be adding more width and length as I have a really high bed, more than a 21 inch drop. What concerns me is that I will have to make it in three sections (maybe four) because my loom won't handle something that large. I am thinking of making each square a different quilt block pattern, and a thin sashing between. I think that will make it easier to join the sections. I figure for the entire bedspread, I'll need 72 blocks with sashing using a 12 inch block. I have been printing out different block patterns, and am up to 42. I want to use 4 to 5 fabrics for all the blocks so they will coordinate. This is going to be an extreme long project, and likely will take me years to do. The good thing is that I will sharpen my block making skills.

That link above also gives sizes for king, queen and full. I agree that a 21" drop isn't enough, especially on bigger beds. My queen mattress is 15" thick by itself, then you have to add the box spring and distance to the floor from the frame. A king may be even higher than that, depending on pillow-top, etc.
Re: Twin size comforter or blanket?
madampolo...have you thought about doing a reversible or quilt as you go quilt? For a hard to handle size it might be a great option!
Re: Twin size comforter or blanket?
I'm really confused by your question. Are you making a blanket and also a quilt? If the blanket is ready-made measure it and make the quilt at least 4" larger in width and length.
The twin mattresses in my guestroom are 39" wide x 76" long x 13" tall. (It has a bit of a pillow top on it so I added an extra inch. Without that it would measure 12" tall.) These mattresses are only a couple of years old so I imagine most would be about this size. If they're really old mattresses they are probably a bit shorter in height. Better to go larger with your measurments. Making it a few inches larger won't be a problem, but if you make it too small you'll be kicking yourself.
If at all possible, it's always better to go by the measurements of the mattress you are actually covering. If that's not possible the measurements of my beds should be what you can expect for a twin size bed.

Yes, I want to make quilts to be used as a blanket on the bed and make a comforter for the (bed)spread on the bed and then add a dust ruffle. I don't have a twin bed yet...hopefully I can have one by the time I get these done! Thanks for the measurements

ht be.
I know a bedspread and a comforter are different. I just didn't know if the term "quilt" was considered a "comforter" or "blanket" when actually making the quilt. I want the comforter size (as the spread, instead of the spread..) and then add a dust ruffle. But I also want to make a quilt for a blanket on the same bed.
I have seen that link you send, and it confused me...
Under Bedding Measurements it says for a twin comforter it is 69x90. But when I go over to the Basic Bedding Size Chart, it is for Queen size only, so I didnt know the number of blocks/charms etc..for a twin anything.

Wow...good luck to you! I admire your dedication! My only issue with doing bigger than a twin is the assembly of the quilt and top/FMQing the top on my regular machine. I am not ready to tackle that yet!
Re: Twin size comforter or blanket?
A quilt is generally the thing you use on the very top of the bed over a sheet and blanket. You need to measure your bed and add the drop. And If you want to tuck under pillows like old fashioned bed spread add 6-8" for the length. I have made king sized quilts and once you have your blocks cut out, the assembly really does not take that long, assuming you are machine piecing. A quilt that size to hand quilt will take a while, can't see years. Or you could send it out to have it machine quilted. Good luck with your project. Hope this made sense cuz there seems to be a difference of opinion as to what you actually want to make.
Re: Twin size comforter or blanket?
There is no such thing as a "standard" measurement for any bed and especially for bedding. You need to measure YOUR bed, adding the amount of drop you want all around and proceed from there. There are super thick mattresses with enormous drops and there are extremely tall/high beds that would require more drop all around. Some people use extra thick mattress pads that could require you add an inch or so onto the drop measurement.
Please measure your own bed or the bed of the person you will be making the quilt for. A bedspread normally covers the top of the bed and comes down to the sides and bottom to the floor. Some even have extra length at the top to cover pillows. A comforter normally covers just the top of the bed and the sides of the top mattress. With these a bedskirt is normally used. If you are making a quilt for your bed, take your own measurements so you won't be disappointed with the end result.....:)
