Your recommendation for thread...
I am placing an order and need to know...which thread is best for quilting on a regular machine...100% cotton or 100% polyester or 50/50 blend? I was using C&C Dual Duty, but heard poly wasn't good for quilting. I am now using 100% cotton, but it seems to not like my machine as I am constantly having to adjust for tension issues. And I heard polyester breaks down after while in the quilt. So what is a good medium? I can't afford to buy one of each kind and try them, and I don't know any specific brands..so what is good? I am going to buy them online as they are cheaper that way, and need to buy several to make my order for free shipping, but also to have what I need in color variety.
Re: Your recommendation for thread...
I am using the cotton thread from Connecting Threads and I love it, but it's 100% cotton.
Re: Your recommendation for thread...
I have used Coats and Clark thread for many many years. I use the Dual Duty XP and just this past week realized that it was poly covered poly!!! My mother used poly thread and so did my great aunt, who is my quilting inspiration. My great aunt made quilts that were to be used every day and her quilts are still going strong. I think there used to be issues with the poly thread "slicing" the cotton fabrics but I don't think that is true anymore. I think that the cotton fabrics are more stable now a days. Also, with the C & C Dual Duty XP, I don't have any lint issues and rarely any breakage problems
Re: Your recommendation for thread...

That's what I have been using...why do you prefer 100% cotton over poly or a blend?

I learned about the "less lint" on the CC Cotton covered Poly from a sewing machine repair man about 25 years ago and have used nothing else since. But I heard it wasn't good for quilting. And I to heard about the Poly cutting the cotton fabric...ergo another reason for my question..is that still true? Do you now the diff between the DD and DD-XP?

It seems like I have less puckering on my quilts with the cotton thread.

I went to the Coats and Clark website. The Coats and Clark Dual Duty XP is poly covered poly. The Dual Duty is a cotton covered poly. http://www.coatsandclark.com/Products/Sewing/Threads/
I just don't believe that the poly thread cuts the cotton fabric. My great aunt passed away 10 years ago at the age of 93. Her quilts are still going strong. If there is a problem with the quilts, it is that a fabric has given up! She was definately from the old school and used what ever she could get her hands on to make the quilts. She never bought fabric "just for a quilt" She used old clothes, sheets, etc. I believe that every quilt has an old blanket or sheet inside it too as she didn't buy batting. I am of the notion that if it isn't broke, why fix it? I don't have any issues with the C & C DD XP so I just don't feel the need to buy anything different. I have a Janome and I have never had any trouble with thread or tension problems with it.
Re: Your recommendation for thread...
100% Egypian Cotton from Connecting Thread. The thinner weight blends into the cotton better, the better quality doesn't produce as much lint as as the cheaper C&C, doesn't break as often. My machines love it: Brother Innov IS-5500, Husqvarna 845 Lily and a cheapy Singer 6199.
Make sure you use the same thread in both your bobbin and upper thread when your quilting, it makes a difference.
Re: Your recommendation for thread...
The quilters here use Poly. Thread confuses me so I use what ever I can find available. Guttermann is 100% poly. Germany does not make a lot of cotton threads and if they do they are hard to find. When I run out of what I have I'm just going to buy what I can here. I used C&C dual for years and my 10 year old quilts that get washed a zillion times are still completely in tact! My new machine just doesn't like it for FMQ I have to use 100% cotton. One lady here will not use anything else to piece with other then silk thread. I think it comes down to what works for you!!! Ive heard conflicting things on connecting threads too some think it's great others think it's crap. I figure no thread is crap it's all in how your machine reacts to it. Some fuzz in some machines some don't. If you already have something that works well in your machine I would not switch to anything else!

Totally agree!!!
Re: Your recommendation for thread...
I also use the Egyptian cotton thread from Connecting Threads...it's 50 weight (perfect for piecing), comes in every color and is very affordable. I've used this thread for several years and never had a problem. I stock up on Cream, Silver and Rosewood, as these seem to go with almost everything I do. :)
