Re: fat quarter calculations
You will have 4 fat quarters. If you cut 18" straight across from the selvege to the fold and then cut that piece on the fold, that gives you 2 fat quarters. Do the same thing to the other half yard and you will have 2 more fat quarters...total: 4. See, you have more than you think you had!! :) Barb

I saw it in my mind, but didn't put it in words right! Yeah, 4 fats per yard! Cool. I am just figuring out how to do with them. I just bought 5 FQ's to go on a quilt I am making for a GD...it went so easy when I cut the squares out of fat quarters! Shopping price/money...having to allow my budget to dictate my quilting...thanks for the correction!
Re: fat quarter calculations
Often there are really good sales on FQ's!!! Good luck...:)

They are reg $1.99 here and I have only seen them on sale for $1.49 lowest. I won't count them out..now that I know what I can do with them!
Re: fat quarter calculations
$1.99 for a FQ? Oh how I wish we could get prices like that here in Canada. Ours go for about $3.99 to $4.99. Ours are also based on a metre instead of a yard so they are 20" x 22". Still for two extra inches it's still pricey up here.

Same here in Aus, Denis. Some are even $6 or $7 :(

That's why I was doing the math to see if I can buy the yardage for the same amount of fabric of FQ's. One yard is (on sale) $5 a yard and that would give me 4 FQ"s for $5 or if I buy 4 FQ's at $2 - that'd be $8 for 4 FQ's so the yardage is cheaper. But I can see where there are times I would want a print that only the FQ's have. I am short on money (always have been) and am always looking for bargains and ways to save. I now have 4, 50% off coupons (all different) so I can get a yard of 4 diff fabs at half price.
Re: fat quarter calculations
The good thing about buying fat quarters is that you get a wide variety of fabrics, instead of 4 quarters of the same fabric. They are $2 here, and I seem to buy a lot. I have just used two layer cakes, and I think I have fallen in love with them. I don't have much use for charm packs. I have a couple of jelly rolls, but haven't used them yet. I think they will be real handy when I do.
Re: fat quarter calculations
I'm still trying to figure out what I can make with fat quarters. Any suggestions?

This was my problem to..what to do with them. But I am making an ABC quilt for my grand daughter. I bought the panel of the ABC's in 5" squares and I cut them out and appliqued them to a 6" square and then needed something to go between the letter blocks. I was at Joannes and trying to figure a color or two that would work, and it just struck me as they were right there in my face...the fat quarters might be the perfect solution so I wouldn't have to buy a half yard of 5 different fabrics and walk the isle back and forth trying to find ones that go together...so I just picked 5 colors I knew were in the letter blocks, and got them...at home I cut them and got 6, 6" squares (I think that was how many...it was the perfect amount and I have 2 left over!) It was easy to cut the FQ into the squares and the quilt top is done and looks great! So for this reason...FQ's were perfect, but they were $2 each ..a bit pricey but in this case...it served the purpose to perfectly to complain about price!
I kind of did the same with charm packs. THose things are just so addicting to look at and gorgous and all.. I thought "oh yeah, I'm doing charms" and got a bunch and couldnt' figure out what to do with them other than just sew the squares together. And then I learned about the tumbler template and again, just cutting the charms, but still just sewing near squares together. So I am still a bit stumped on what to do with charms. But then again..you can make the HST..half square triangles with them but other than that...I'm still looking!
