use a dry erase board to practice the FMQ movement. It will "train"your brain to make the movements. some people use a pencil and paper. then move up to practice pieces. it does take a while to feel comfortable with it.

The best way to learn as the others have said, is Practice, Practice, Practice. If you go through the gallery you will see some very beautiful quilts and many are not done with free motion quilting. You will find the quilting method that you like best and will make some gorgeous quilts I am sure.
It is very easy to finish a quilt with out FMQ. You can stitch in the ditch with a running stitch or use a decorative stitch (which is what I have done on my last 2) You can also stitch, with walking foot, 1/4" inside the seams will look nice also. Possibly a grid pattern using painters tape to mark your grid, and then you just sew right next to it. U could also tie or hand quilt. Good luck with what ever you decide and make sure to post pics when you are finished.
Thank you Kate - What a great tutorial! I just finished a quilt top and have been going crazy wondering what kind of quilting to do. I just don't want to mess it up. Think this tut will help me to just choose a pattern and do it.
