Kizzie's post and picture inspired me to ask, has anyone tried the technique that I think is called whole cloth or trapunto quilting?
It looks difficult, but very interesting. I saw a few at the Paducah Quilt Show. One was dyed and the quilting was done around the dyed area. Another thing on my bucket list, but way down the list.
I know my first attempt will be a small wall hanging, not a king size quilt!
I tried a small one many years ago and I don't remember it being too difficult. We stuffed it from the back and did very tiny, close stippling around each shape to puff them out.

I saw your wall hanging, you actually stuffed it from the back? Did you quilt it with a backing then put another backing on to cover the slash places you stuffed from? I think it is a very interesting technique. I'm a little sore today, but I'm really glad to get done what I accomplished, despite the fall. Thanks for asking!Quote:

Oh Jean, I honestly don't remember. That's how long ago it was. But I can't remember tearing out my hair, so it couldn't have been that hard to do.
I would check out what Denis posted. You'll probably learn alot off those sites.

I tried to do a trapunto recently just a small one but it is a lot of fun.. and a lot of work :)
I got the Idea from this page http://cadouri-din-inima.blogspot.de/ , and I bought Getas book. It looks sooo beautiful, I love this technique.
Leah Day recently did a wholecloth quiltalong. It was a lovely wallhanging and I think the pattern was free to download. There are a series of videos explaing the techniques and blog posts answering the questions from participants as they came up.

There's a difference between wholecloth and trapunto. A classic wholecloth quilt is all quilting on one color fabric, usually white or ecru. The designs for wholecloth are very elaborate and are gorgeous when finished. You can buy wholecloth quilt kits with the design already on the fabric. A wholecloth quilt can contain some trapunto (which is padding behind certain elements of your quilt design). Trapunto can be done on pieced quilts also to give dimension to the design.
I made my daughter a white wholecloth quilt as a wedding gift in 1990 and she was thrilled with it. This was during the era when I only did hand quilting. Alas, no picture! The quilt is in safekeeping to be passed to my DGD when she marries.
I recommend you begin small with wholecloth, maybe a pillow or small christening quilt. There's a LOT of work in this type of quilting. Trapunto is fun and there are several good tutorials on YouTube. Some LAQers are skilled enough to do wholecloth with their machines...awesome! :)
There's faux trapunto too. Just as impressive but a lot less work. You use 2 layers of batting; cotton on the bottom and a poly on top, both are the same the same size, sandwiched between the backing and top, draw your design or free hand a design then quilt the bejeebers out of the empty spaces. The quilting motifs will jump out. It's a great way to start.
Jean you can get patterns to lay over your sandwiched cloth, then you just follow that in FMQ. Not really free motion when following lines on a pattern but you know what I mean. You sew through the paper. I did one yonks ago, might dig the idea out again if I ever get on with this batik quilt I am supposed to be doing
Thanks for all the great ideas! I will mull this over in my mind. It is something I would like to try. I wondered about the batting, thanks, Denis for that advice, and Allison, I've seen that paper method, in fact I purchased a book with quilting patterns in it that were designed to use them this way. And Barb, I can't even imagine doing this by hand, I'm sure your quilt is a family treasure and exquisitly beautiful.
Actually did a whole cloth quilt for my youngest grand daughter for her crib. It was done in lavendar. I did it using a simple grid pattern with butterflies in between. It was also hand quilted. I put prairie points of the solid front and patterned back on it. If I can remember to take camera with me to DD, I will try to get a pic of it. I love the look of whole cloth quilts, because the quilting really stands out.
