    Default backing problems

Ok ladies no matter what I do I can never get a smooth back to my quilts. I sometime use fleece and then regular cotton material. Keep in mind that i have to lay it on the floor to roll it up or to tack. Has anyone tried those T pins? i was wondering if they would work. maybe put them in only the back to tack it to the floor until i get it tacked? any inpur would be helpful..

Hmm..I am assuming you are doing this on carpet? Not sure how you'd stick a T pin into anything if it were tile or wood floor. It's worth a shot. If you were doing it on a bare floor I'd tell you to tape your backing fabric to the floor, but pins would work with carpet. Try and get all the wrinkles out and as taut as possible without stretching the backing fabric before layering on the batting and front.

Ok so I also use the floor with carpeting to put my quilts together. I use the long quilting pins you know the ones with the little yellow ball on top the long ones, the pins go thru the carpet like a push pin to hold my quilt in place, then I spray the basting spray and take the pins out as I go I start in the middle spray a little, smooth it out, spray a little smooth it out until I am at the end. I only pin the top not the bottom or sides because then you would not be able to put your quilt together. I do the same for both the back and front of my quilt, does this make any sense, let me know if this help.

Hi! Well what works for me is,that I tape my backing to a large table or the floor. Lay the batting on top, making sure everything is smooth smooth... I lay the top on, turning one end back to the centre to expose the wrong side, then spray both wrong side and batting then put back in place. Do same with other side.. Then I pin from centre out.. I find basting throws everything off for me. Hope I was of some help...

For small quilts I use my table top and spray basting. I put the batting down first then the back smoothing as I go along. then turn it and put the top on. For bigger quilts (I have only hand quilted) I use my bed, and the bent quilters safety pins. I quilt with 14" hoop so it is easy to get all the wrinkles out as you go along. Starting in the middle of course. Not sure what I would do with large quilt if I were to attempt to machine quilt it. Once I get my very own sewing room I plan on having a wall to put the whole thing together, at least that is my dream.

Let me tell you what I did, because I have carpeted floors too. I bought some clamps like a carpenter would use and I laid out my backing and batting on my scuffed up dining room table and clamped one side the then pulled it taunt and clamped the other side. Now, I've only done this with the quilt I'm currently working on, so I'm not positive that that it works. I've done a small section of machine quilting and everything looks good for now. I can't remember where I got this idea but I didn't think of it...I don't think!!
