I've just made it with 6-1/2 yards, but it was a tight squeeze, I'd go for 7 plus for sure.
I just looked in my handy dandy little Quilter's Pocket Reference, and for Queen Quilt backs starting at 80 x 90 they suggest 7 1/4. up to 9 yds for 100 x 110. in between is 88 x 104 is at 8 yds. That's with an east to west layout, 3 panels.
I kept reading and that gives you a 1/4 yd extra, with a 1/2 inch seam for joining and at least 2 in extra on all sides.

Depends on the width of the quilt. If you buy 108" backing you will need 3 yds. If you re using 45" wide you would need 8-9. If using 60" you would need 2/1-3. I usually try to buy backing that does not need to be seemed or pieced. Hope this helps.

Do you want to know about the back of the quilt or the background to the pattern you are using?

I think she's asking about background fabric for the quilt itself is this correct? Depending on how much the background fabric is being used in the pattern it can be anywhere from 3 yrds up but I'd say on average between 2 & 3 yds for background. Backing I'd go with what the other ladies have said above.
