Yes, that's basically what hand quilting should look like. It looks like you need to have your fabric pulled a little tighter in your hoop when you are quilting...that would eliminate the puckering in your design. The goal in hand quilting is to make your stitches the same size and also leaving a space in between each two stitches that is the same size as a stitch. Hand quilting is a skill that is learned through lots of practice. At first concentrate on making your stitches the same size....everything will improve with practice!
:)
MAHALO for in input. I thought I had my fabric in my hoop really, really tight do you think maybe my fabric is not tight enough in the back? I never new that you should do two stitches the same size then leave that amount of space for the next stitch I guess you learn something new every day lol. My wrists hurt that is for sure maybe I should have started with a smaller project right?Tks again :)
As an avid hand quilter I have to concur with Barb, Looks like you just need to make sure your back fabric is as tight as the front fabric. The more you practice at it the better you will get. There are some great tuts on you tube showing how to hand quilt. Me on the other hand is just learning to machine quilt. So good luck to both of us. :)
I love this design! Gonna be a stupendous quilt when done. I hand quilt as well. You do want to make sure that you start in the middle of the quilt and smooth out the top and bottom within the hoop as you go along. I like mine tight but not where as you can bounce a dime off of it, if that makes sense. I like a wee bit of give and take for the rhythm of the stitching
I know this is a border fabric from another post that you did. Is there any quilting in the center of the quilt or is it at least well pinned? Like Blondie said, begin in the middle of the quilt and work out toward the edges. I'm not sure that simply quilting around the border of the quilt is going to give you what you want.
Sandy....The way my reply was written to you must have confused you. After you make a stitch you need to leave a tiny space and then do your next stitch. The space should be the same size as your stitches are. This is easy to do but not so easy for me to explain to you. Also the top and bottom fabrics need to be taut but not super tight. There needs to be a little 'play' in the fabric so you can manipulate your needle, otherwise it will be very hard for you to sew. I would recommend that you make a small quilt sandwich and use it to practice on. Don't worry about the size of your stitches, just try to make them the same size. Hand quilting can be very relaxing and rewarding once you learn the stitch. I wish I could sit down with you for ten minutes to show you.
I'm so sorry if my reply confused you. :(
I agree with Karen that you might have to create at least a wave pattern in the center of the body of the quilt to go along with the border to balance out the complete quilt.
Also I think that fabric might be a blend of poly/cotton which has some stretch to it - try to check as you work to keep both taut layers smooth. Agree that it takes practice, practice, practice to get those stitches evenly apart.
One gal uses a pattern wheel that she runs on tailor's chalk first, over a section of cloth, then use that as a reference for spacing. Haven't tried that yet, but sounds interesting. :)
Make sure you show us your progress!

There is a product called "Tiger Tape" it is a reusuable tape that has stitching lines evenly spaced to help keep stitches the same length. http://www.sewfancy.com/tiger-tape.htm
Personally, I think it looks great! But I am not a perfectionist in that I never think I will enter mine to be judged. You might want to take the advice of the others also. Happy Quilting!
Bless your heart for doing that by hand. I did it for years and I retired my hands from it. It looks 'real purty'. Keep it up. It's going to be beautiful!
What a lovely quilt that is going to be!
I thought it looked fine...I like hand quilting because it does make the quilt look handmade...
Sorry that your wrist hurts...but it is going to be a special quilt! (cos I love turtles!)
just a quick,,,,,i love love your turtles and sandstars,,,,,,,,five stitches and my fingers are numb,,,so all you ladies that do this hand stitching i admire so much,,,,,,,,,,
great job and lovely work,,,,,
I watched an Amish lady hand quilt in Pennsylvania one summer and she mentioned that the fabric can only be tight enough in the hoop to enable you to go under the bottom layer and be able to push your finger up to make a little peak, then you know you have the right tautness in your hoop...
Just remember everyone develops their own way of stitching that works best for them. I doubt any of us quilt the same way. I love the way it is going to look. Very pretty! Take all the hints you get and you will find what works best for you. And remember, "There are no Quilt Police"! Hugs, Jan L.
