Re: batting
ditto the others, warm and white is lovely stuff. If though, I want something more tactile to use as a playmat as well as a cot quilt, I use a higher loft batting. I have made a few now and people love them.......babies too lol. I put a plastic carrier bag under one of the blocks so it rustles when the baby grabs for it, put dif textured things on. I have also added squeekers inside some blocks. It is amazing how the babies find them and remember which block they are under. But for a new born baby and a soft layette quilt, I would use the W&W.
Just for info though you can get Moo sounds, baaa sounds, horse and pig sounds...........oh and I saw monkey and dolphin sound 'squeekers' too. It great if you are making an animal quilt as a play mat
