Basting Spray

I use basting spray, but I was wondering what others do. Do you spray the batting or fabric?

I pin...but I am thinking I will try the spray between the back and the batting. I seem to do pretty good with the pins on the front, but keeping that back in place has been a problem..no matter how hard I try! But I hear the spray is expensive and as many as I do...I have to watch the budget so that is why I say maybe for just the back/batting secureness. Plus, my husband wont' allow me to do to much spraying (if any!) and I don't have any other place to spray but the kitchen table, which I can cover etc. So I will keep thinking and reading and next time the 50% off coupon comes around at Joannes...I might give it a try.

I spray the batting....I saw on-line where it said to spray the batting and it says that on the can I have. The LQS also told me to spray the batting because it could possibly stain the fabric, if it's sprayed directly.

I've become a recent convert to the spray. The only problem with it is I have all the pins I need and I will have to keep buying the spray. But to me it is worth it! It makes quick work of basting and makes quilting so much faster with no pins to remove every few inches. One can of 505 has basted one king sized quilt, two twin quilts, two tablerunners and there is still some left in the can. There are no fumes so I use it right in the kitchen. I tape the backing to the floor, layer the batting and the top. I peel back the top and spray the batting, then put them back together. This is the way that works best for me. Then I peel back the top and batting that are stuck together, spray the underside of the batting and adhere it to the back. Presto! A basted quilt! I untape the backing from the floor (which kept the back nice and taut) and it stays together very nicely.

I just have a little question here. Does this basting spray wash out well? Or is it there for the duration?

I've done both, spray the fabric and spray the batting. I think I get a smoother sandwich when I spray the batting.

I only use the 505 and it washed out completely as far as I can tell. Nothing is gummy or stuck together in my quilts.

I understand you should lightly spray the back of the fabric & not the batting because the batting will absorb more spray than necessary to do the job. The sprays do wash out with the first washing of the quilt. Over time, I have noticed how extremely little spray you need to hold things together.
