I pin...but I am thinking I will try the spray between the back and the batting. I seem to do pretty good with the pins on the front, but keeping that back in place has been a problem..no matter how hard I try! But I hear the spray is expensive and as many as I do...I have to watch the budget so that is why I say maybe for just the back/batting secureness. Plus, my husband wont' allow me to do to much spraying (if any!) and I don't have any other place to spray but the kitchen table, which I can cover etc. So I will keep thinking and reading and next time the 50% off coupon comes around at Joannes...I might give it a try.
I spray the batting....I saw on-line where it said to spray the batting and it says that on the can I have. The LQS also told me to spray the batting because it could possibly stain the fabric, if it's sprayed directly.
I've become a recent convert to the spray. The only problem with it is I have all the pins I need and I will have to keep buying the spray. But to me it is worth it! It makes quick work of basting and makes quilting so much faster with no pins to remove every few inches. One can of 505 has basted one king sized quilt, two twin quilts, two tablerunners and there is still some left in the can. There are no fumes so I use it right in the kitchen. I tape the backing to the floor, layer the batting and the top. I peel back the top and spray the batting, then put them back together. This is the way that works best for me. Then I peel back the top and batting that are stuck together, spray the underside of the batting and adhere it to the back. Presto! A basted quilt! I untape the backing from the floor (which kept the back nice and taut) and it stays together very nicely.
I spray baste on the wall using Patsy Thompson's method. Here's a video explaining it:

I spray the batting.
I just have a little question here. Does this basting spray wash out well? Or is it there for the duration?
I've done both, spray the fabric and spray the batting. I think I get a smoother sandwich when I spray the batting.
I only use the 505 and it washed out completely as far as I can tell. Nothing is gummy or stuck together in my quilts.
Just watched the little youtube and it explained that it washed out.
I understand you should lightly spray the back of the fabric & not the batting because the batting will absorb more spray than necessary to do the job. The sprays do wash out with the first washing of the quilt. Over time, I have noticed how extremely little spray you need to hold things together.
I spray the batting. I find I get a smoother finish this way. I don't use much and a can lasts a very long time. Never had a problem with it washing out. I use my polished floors to spray on and find clean up really easy
Lot of great information in this thread - just wish I had seen it a few days ago or asked myself.
I spray the batting. I am totally sold on spray basting. It works great!
I'm a a bit old fashioned and will stick with PINS.. (lol, pun intended) I can't use alot of spray stuff with my health. Lots of allergies and don't want to develope more.
My Quilting friend who does use spray says it works best on smaller items.. "not the Big A$$ quilts" that I do. I guess I scrunch and shove too much and work the spray holding power right out .. nothing could hold up to MY product testing...sewing except pins.
I have used it a bit, I am still experimenting with each project. I am working on some dresden plate things and spray basted the first ever plate onto the background, sandwiched the block and quilted it with a blanket stitch ending up with a hot pot mat.
It worked great and I am going to repeat that process with the placemats I am making. When I am done I will post a picture, didn't take a picture of the first one. It turned out so well I already gave it to my future DIL at her shower on Sunday.
On the rare occasions I use basting spray, I put it on the batting. I bought a machine quilting class on Craftsy and that's also what the instructor recommends....then after she smooths the fabric on bot side of the batting she gives it a press! I'm going to try this the next time I make a tablerunner. :)
