Hand quilting thread issues
So for the firs time I started to hand quilt my project. I purchased which I thought was hand quilting thread from the fabric store but upon using it it starts to frey is there something better I should be using? I thought I was safe using what the fabric store stated it was for hand quilting, any suggestions what to use would be appreciated. Mahalo
Re: Hand quilting thread issues
Aloha Sandy,
For hand quilting I've used a cotton thread that's wrapped with poly that already has some bee's wax with it to help it slide throught the layers. Below is a link from the place I order it last time.
Mettler Cotton Wrapped Poly Hand Quilting Thread
#002 - White $3.25 fo4 165/yrd
#003 - Black
#004 - Natural

Haven't googled to see if anyone has it cheaper, I already had it in my stash when we came here.

Re: Hand quilting thread issues
I use Coats and Clark from Hobby Lobby and never have any trouble with it. It comes on a pink roll. It feels very stiff, although it is 100% cotton, maybe it is coated. What are you quilting shouldn't make any difference though. I have handquilted for years and have never had any trouble with this oldie but goodie.

Re: Hand quilting thread issues
I don't know. All I know is I have never had stitches break or fray after numerous washing (baby quilts). I just personally prefer the 100% cotton, from coats and clark, they sell at Joann's Hobby Lobby, and places like that. Maybe the other girls can give you their opinion.

You are using Rayon thread on cotton fabric? If that's the case that is probably why it's splitting. Rayon thread isn't usually as strong. Also, if you use too long a piece of thread when hand quilting it can fray because of the friction of pulling it through the fabric repeatedly.
I use Coats and Clark 100% cotton hand-quilting thread when I hand quilt as well. I tried Gutterman before and it frayed and knotted too much for me.
Re: Hand quilting thread issues
I used 100% cotton thread when I did hand quilting. There is a product called Thread Heaven that is a thread conditioner. You run your thread across it and it coats your thread and prevents fraying. I comes in a tiny square blue case and costs about $3...worth it's weight in gold! You should have no trouble finding it at the fabric store or quilt shop. :)
Re: Hand quilting thread issues
Tks for the info I wil go get some. I hope my quilt shop has it here in Hawaii

Re: Hand quilting thread issues
Sandy, let me know if you find it here on the island 'cause I haven't. I have bee's wax which is ok from FabricMart but Thread Heaven I haven't seen at FM or BF. Maybe Calico Cat?
Re: Hand quilting thread issues
Tks for the info and I was going to call Calico Cat I did manage to find my quilting hoop there a good one. I am dying to take classes on how to make the Hawaiian quilts can you suggest where to go other than Kimokee Dry Goods I know they have classes a little bit expensive though.

Also, watch how you use your thread when you sew. The end you pull off the spool should be the end you put through your needle, something about how it's wound on the spool and the fibers and all that.
I use Coats and Clarks hand quilting thread also.
Hugs,

There's a group of old, old true Hawaiian ladies that meet here in Makaha Valley that make the traditional hand quilted patterned quilts. I haven't gone yet as it's so labor intensive and I'm thinking what in the world would I have to sell it for and to whom. lol I would need the whole new $$$ cash flush market. hahaha. I'll see if I can go this week if not next week, my local friend will need to bring me in for the first visit. They will teach you all the "right" traditional ways by Aunties. Many books are "wrong" I've been told, my friend took a couple of my quilts to them. "Lovely, but I'm wasting my talents." Got to love them right?!?
I'm sure they would have relatives or now of a group in the Honolulu area for you to visit. It's all about referrals as you know. :)
Aloha, Ruby
