    Question borders

ok so i got my measurements and was gonna start cutting then my friends mother told me to cut my borders out on the lengthwise grain and not salvage.......i just want to know if anyone else does that? if so how it works and if i should really do it that way...she said it has alot less stretch to it. thanks in advance!!!!

I think you can do it either way. If someone doesn't want their strips pieced together they'll cut it lengthwise. I usually cut mine on the crosswise grain and just piece it.

That's what a very experienced quilter who works at my local QS told me, and I do it when I can afford to do it.

I'm sure that is a better way, but I do the WOF and have had no problems. I think you'll be fine either way. : )

I'm with Jean I do it the way I can afford to do it! I do piece them on the diagonal though so the flow is better!

It depends on how much fabric I have. Often use what I have leftover and not enough length to cut it that way.

Same here...I use what I have and most of my borders are WOF (wide side, not length...otherwise I'd be piecing and piecing and piecing....)

I try to cut all my borders lengthwise but sometimes it's just not possible. I recently had to piece a border and I thought I would not like it, but it's barely noticeable and now that the quilt is on a bed it's not a problem at all! I have another quilt to put borders on now that has to be cut crosswise because of the print. This is going to be a lot of piecing because it's another large quilt.

When you piece your border together use diagonal seams unless you are working with a stripe, plaid or large print..these are better pieced straight across. This makes the seam much less noticeable because you can match the print (hopefully).

I don't know which "way" it is but I cut it as it is folded off the bolt. Salvages together and fold on the other end. I don't mind piecing it but this way...it is very easy to cut several strips at once and have them all even and not lop sided. I would think folding the other way for longer strips would be very difficult as more fabric means more option for unevenness...And also, seems to me strength is better the way I do it as referes to stretch...the longer the strip, the more likely of stretchiness? Not sure, but makes sense. I just do it my way cause of that and so far...no problems at all! I mean each strip is 44/45 inches long and doubled would be the length of the side of a twin size quilt...so there would be one seam on each side.
