A walking foot is for straight-line quilting. Following a grid or echo quilting. You use a darning foot for FMQ.

A walking foot is really helpful if you want to stitch in the ditch (SITD) which is a form of straight-line stitching as Karen mentioned above.![]()
lol! See my post thread about the new book I got: Foolproof Machine Quilting - it's got GREAT ideas for quilting with a walking foot beyond sitd and lines!

do u have to adjust the stitch length? Saw a tut where the woman was fmq with walking foot. hmm. Thanks for the info.

A walking foot helps "feed" the fabric through the same way your feed dogs do, only from the top of the fabric (that's why it's also called an even feed when it's a built in option on some machines.) Since your feed dogs don't come into play in FMQ I don't see how someone could FMQ with a walking foot. My Pfaff won't FMQ with it's even feed engaged.
Angie, I saw your post, but wouldn't that be an awful lot of stopping and turning and shoving an entire quilt through your machine to do a design like your sample?
