    Default NEW TURTLE FABRIC PROBLEMS

So I have this new quilt I am working on and I wanted to outline the turtle and the star fish but my problem is I don't know if I should outline them by hand or by machine and if I do by machine what foot do I use and how do I outline these? This is a rather large quilt 90 x 102 does anyone have any suggestions for me. Mahalo

I just love sea turtles!!Because of the shapes I would say a darning foot would be the easiest on a machine. Because of the size though I would do it by hand, it's a lot easier to control by hand. Happy Quilting

I would use basting spray, use an open toed darning foot and machine outline them. Make sure to bring the bobbin thread to the front to that it doesn't get tangled and so that remember to tie and bury them.

Like to work left to right in a row, then will tie/bury threads before dropping to the next section. Don't want any to get tangled with the next section, plus I don't like to have hours of tie/bury in the future.

Good luck either way you choose to do the quilt. It will come out lovely.

I would definately do this by hand, unless you are proficient at free motion quilting. Hand quilted around them would really set them apart, in my opinion.

I did use the basting spray but it seems to go away the next day does that happen to you? I don't know if I have that open toed darning foot I will have to check and I have been practicing on bringing up the bobbin thread to the front. Shall I use just a strait stitch going around those turtles and starfish or a decorative stitch? Tks for the help.

You might be using too light of a coat of spray, you don't want it to soak but you need a nice, even spray to hold.

I like a straight stitch, about 3.5 in length for outlining, gives it an old feel - just MHO. Remember to smooth out your quilt section as you move across, a little tricky when your outlining to make sure you don't bunches.

Looks as though you've decided to do it by machine, hope it goes well for you! I would do it by hand - but that's just my own opinion. Best of Luck!!!
