    Default Dresden Plate

Ok so I have made all my plates that i want to for a quilt. They are approx. 12 inches across. How do I determine the size of the background block? I put it on a piece of the material I'm going to use and then added 5 inches on each side of block and marked with a pin, the total block was then about 23 inches. I thought it made my plate look like a tea saucer-tiny. I re-positioned it and only added 3 inches around which made the total block size about 17 inches and I now wonder if there will be enough area to quilt. those of you who have made blocks that then have to be sewn on to fabric could you please help?

I'm sorry to keep asking all these questions about this one particular quilt but I do want it as perfect as I can get it as it is a gift for a friend who is retiring after thirty yrs of teaching and all of my family who quilts has passed.

    thanks so much

I love the Dresden Plate! I'm by no means an expert, but I would only make the block 2# larger - although 3# is a good idea then once you have them all sewn down you could square them up to 13.5 or maybe even 14.5 . As for room for quilting I would stitch in the ditch! Hope that helps, Kathy

Questions help all of us....I can't help you with this one though sorry. I haven't made a Dresden plate yet but I will follow. What kind of quilting are you wanting to fit around your Dresden?

Davids girl i was just going to either quilt straight out from the points or from the valleys of the blades... my blades are pointed instead of rounded.

I have not yet made a Dresden Plate, but I would think that 2" on each side would be fine. Just my opinion.

Thanks pam all opinions are welcome.... I'm thinking that 2 inch will turn out fine and that way you will see just the plate and not all the other.... kellie

I'm pretty sure the ones I've made were placed on a 14.5" block. You can check them out in my albums.
