Re: Walking foot problems
I have a Brother SQ-9000 and I don't have this problem but what you might want to do is make sure you have a size 14 needle a new one that is and set your tension between 4-5. I never had a problem with my walking foot and if that fails call Brother and they will walk you thru how to fix your problem. Can I ask where you got your machine I would like to get a better machine. Mahalo
Re: Walking foot problems
Hi bdk,
sorry my English isn't very good, I'm from Germany.
Maybe is that a problem: How long is your Quilt? And how heavy? What do you use for backing?
Tiny Stitches may come from the heavyness of a quilt, when your sewing machine will transport a long side of your quilt and the quilt wrenches at the walking foot and the carrier(?).

Re: Walking foot problems
Are you trying to do FMQing or stitching in the ditch (SITD)? Your walking foot can be used for straight line quilting (stitch in the ditch) or grids or any straight lines. If you want to free motion quilt, you need to drop your feeddogs and put on a darning or open toe foot. I know this probably isn't enough information to help you, but can you give us a little more information on what you are trying to do? Barb
Re: Walking foot problems
Have you used the foot before? What happened then? Are you doing anything different now as compared to then?
Re: Walking foot problems
I haven't used the foot before now...I just got a new machine and the walking foot came with it...I'm trying to do straight lines...I am mostly quilting around the inside edge of each piece...my quilt isn't too big...around 53 by 55 inches I think....and it's not very heavy either...
@AlohaSandy...I bought my machine at Walmart...I also purchased a two year service plan.. just in case something is wrong with it, they will replace it...
Re: Walking foot problems
This is probably a stupid question, but do you have the little prong thingie over the screw that holds the needle in? I don't know how to explain what I am asking, but there is a forked 'arm' that USUALLY sticks out the right side of the walking foot (if you have the foot on the machine), and it 'hugs' the hand-screw that locks the needle in place. That arm moves up and down as you set and engages the walking foot. Maybe??????
Where are you in NC? I live in Winston-Salem and have daughters in Charlotte and Lenoir.
Re: Walking foot problems
OOPS--as you sew (not as you set).

Re: Walking foot problems
Here's a picture of what Nana is describing. The right side of your walking foot has a bar or hook, that needs to be over the screw sticking out of the right side of your presser foot. If it is not "hooked" correctly on this screw, your fabric will not feed properly. The walking foot bar or hook needs to go up and down with the needle...that moves the fabric through properly.
Re: Walking foot problems
My first thought was the same as NanaB's. first make sure the foot is on correctly. next rethread your machine to make sure the thread is not hanging up somewhere. test on a scrap before trying to sew on your quilt again.
I haven't used that machine but have sewn on DD's cs6000 with a walking foot. I haven't had that problem with hers.
Usually i find problems i have with ANY machine are user error. either I got in a hurry or overlooked something simple. SIGH....and I've been sewing for nearly 50 yrs so you think I'd know better.
Re: Walking foot problems
Actually, that was what I was getting to, the lift arm on the walking foot. Depending on the style, if it's an arm, you need to make sure it either sits on top of the needle screw or if it's a prong like the picture above, make sure it straddles the needle screw.
Re: Walking foot problems
I followed the directions in the machine manual when I attached the walking foot so I think I had it on correctly..I had the lift arm over the screw...I really think that it has something to do with the thickness of the quilt...cause I tried using the walking foot on two thin pieces of fabric that had no batting between them, and it worked fine...Plus I have been practicing free motion quilting with my spring action quilting foot and I have the same problem with those stitches...so I really think it must have something to do with the quilt thickness...I'm not sure what to do about it though..I tried adjusting my tension but that didn't really help too much...
Re: Walking foot problems
Have you tried increasing or reducing the pressure on your pressure foot? There should be a dial on top of your mahcine near the front of the head. Turn it up or down and see what happens.
Re: Walking foot problems
I think I figured out part of the problem! I was using a polyester thread but I had a spool of machine quilting thread that I picked up a few weeks ago so I decided to use that (it's cotton) and it is working a lot better..it still isn't perfect but it is better...Yay:).........@Dennis I'm not sure if my machine has adjustable presser foot pressure... that is one of the things that I was gonna try to adjust the other day after I started having the problems with it but I can't find where it is on my machine...On the Brother website in the machine specifications it says that it does have adjustable pressure but I can't find where to adjust it...and from what I have seen, the manual doesn't say anything about it...so I don't know..thanks for all ya'lls help though :)

I live in the eastern part of NC.....About 30 to 45 minutes from the Fayettville/Fort Bragg area...
Re: Walking foot problems
I have brother machines and my embroidery/sewing machine does not have a pressure foot adjustment. The quilting machine does have the pressure foot adjustment. Both of my machines have the walking foot with the 2-prong arm so I have to make sure the screw is between the prongs.
