    Default MATH QUESTION REGARDING BORDERS

So I am starting a new quilt 90 x 108 and I wanted to put either one or two borders on it 1.5 inches wide. I pu. rschaed my backing today when I got home I realized that the fabric is 45 and I purchased 6 yards of fabric and will sew them together to make it 90 wide so , it looks like I might have to cut down the sides of my quilt order for my backing fabric to fit. Does anyone know how many inches I need to cut off on the sides of my quilt for the borders? I have tried to figure it out and I think I have it but don't want to cut unless I am absoultely correct. Tks for the help.

You will have to allow for the selvedges and seam allowances on your backing fabric as well. If it's a true 45" wide you may lose 2 inches in the 4 selvedges, then another 1/2 to 1 inch in the seam. Your backing may end up being 87 or 88" wide.

When you say you want 1.5" borders, are you saying that is how wide the finished border will be, or how wide you will be cutting the stripes to make the borders?

I would like the border to be 1.5 wide and will cut the border 2.00 to allow for 1/4" seams. If I do decide to do a 2" border I will cut the borders 2.5 that is why I want to make sure I don't cut off too much from the quilt top because it has a print which I have attached a picture in my album it is the turquose blue with the trutles on it.

I personally would not cut my borders to fit the back...your already piecing the back have you thought about using extra blocks from the front or left over fabric from the front and using it to make your back wider? You would have three seams verses two. What ever you decide the fabric is beautiful!

I guess I wasn't clear since this fabric borders are on the right an left side going down the quilt what I planned on doing is making this all one piece because of the design on this fabric. I was going to hand quilt all the turtles and starfish that is why I was trying to keep it all in one big piece I am not cutting up the quilt at all. But I am keeping your idea for another quilt great idea. Mahalo

I'm a little confused about your measurements. My suggestion is that you do not cut your backing fabric until your quilt top is complete with the borders added the way you want them to be. Then measure your quilt top and cut your backing fabric about 3 inches larger all around than your quilt top to allow for shifting and a little shrinking that takes place furing quilting. After your quilt is quilted, then you can trim your backing even with your top and add the binding. Barb

OK so right now my backing fabric is 90 across and my quilt top is 90 across, but if I add borders I wont have enough of the backing fabric to cover the borders. So how much am I suppose to cut of the top of the quilt sides in order for the backing fabric to fit properlly I hope that explains things.
