Walking Foot!

Hello everyone! I've never quilted before but I'm having a baby and I want to make him a quilt. I've been watching the MSQC videos on youtube but I'm not sure which feet I need to get started. I only have the standard feet that came with my machine and I wondering " Is it worth it to buy a walking foot at this stage?" Do you think that I can survive without it ? I plan on purchasing both the quilting foot and the1/4-inch quilting foot because the the seams that need to be created and I want to learn to free-motion quilt. PLEASE HELP! lol

Yes you will need a walking foot to quilt the quilt if you "SITD". but if you do FMG on the whole quilt you would still need a walking foot to sew the binding on it. Unless you have one of the new sewing machine that have it built in,(don't remember what it is called right now). Others on here will give you even better advise than me. :)
BTW welcome to the forum you will find a lot of help and support and ideas here, and congrats on the baby who is on the way!!! :)

I did alot with my machine without a walking foot and it was just fine but when I did start to use the walking foot because I was having difficulty with some thick fabric I had boy it sure made it much easier. This week I also found out how important it was to make sure that you are using the correct needle they recommend (14) they meaning the Brother representatives. My machine was not stitiching the complete decorative stitching I was using and once I put the 14 needle in it was great. I have yet to try the free motion quilting scared I guess that I will mess up my quilt lol. You will notice the quilters on the forum use alot of abbreviations I have yet to learn all of them but all you have to do is ask and they are very helpful, good luck.

I use my walking foot for all straight stitch quilting.

Hi Jade013, welcome to the forum.
When I was shopping around for a walking foot, my local quilt store quoted me $50 for it. I didn't buy it because I wasn't sure I want to invest that much in my old machine. Anyway, recently, I found a website that sell parts for my machine (1956 Singer 99k) and it was $20! Moral of the story: shop around! I haven't used my walking foot yet, but I know I will.

I'm fairly new to quilting and I have a regular foot and a walking foot. I've found that I can not live without my walking foot!!!

I didn't have a walking foot at first, but saw that I needed one. I know it cost a little bit, but it will make your life easier because it keeps the layers of fabric from puckering as you sew.

I appreciate everyone of your responses, so thank you all very much. I did find a walking foot on ebay for about $20 bucks and I know that is a great deal. Instead of having a guest book at my baby shower, I want everyone to sign or decorate a piece of fabric and those squares are going to make up my quilt. My plan was to only make the one quilt but I love working with my hands so I may get addicted.

Welcome Jade! SITD is stitch in the ditch. A quilt from your baby shower is a great idea! But, you may get addicted, then the "one quilt plan" will go right out the window. Happy Sewing!

Hello Jade and welcome to the world of quilting. This is the best place to be to learn and get inspiration. I don't have a walking foot with my "broken" machine but I am going to make sure I have one when I get a new machine.

Stitch in the ditch. That means where your seams are put together. If you are planning on quilting it yourself, you will most likely need a walking foot, depending on the thickness of your batting. Have you considered hand quilting it, or putting it together and having some one else quilt it for you?

I buy feet for my machines from SewingMachinesPlus.com. They make sure you order the correct one for your brand and model of machine and their prices are very good!

I think my machine came with one (back in the dark ages :) )but I've never used it. I do all my work with the regular foot and have never had a problem.
