    Default King size quilt....questions

The short story....What is the easiest way to finish a king size quilt? Birthing/pillowcase turning and tying? Is it easier to just tie and bind?

The long story....Have a fabulous family here that we do alot of stuff with. My friend has been searching for a comforter that she likes and can't find one. She was in the PX (were military, it's our local military store like a small walmart) and one of the shops outside the PX had some quilts. She found one she liked but it was over 300, she said the saleslady had told her it was hand done in Poland. She asked me to go look at it and tell her if it was worth it. She owns old quilts from her hubby's gran so she was looking for heirloom. I went yesterday and both my husband and I took one look and those are done fully by machine even the binding and done with thin cheap fabrics.....salespeople should not lie about something like that. So because were really good friends I told her if she wanted I would take her online and we would look at fabrics and clearance fabrics and see what we could find and it was an investment and I would help her make a quilt for her bed. I'm going to use an easy quick pattern so I'm wondering what the easiest way to finish it? My machine can't handle a king size to FMQ. So I thought tying would give her not only the look she's after but easy and quick to do. What method for that size has more success.....birthing or binding?

I think it would lay better if you used binding. With a quilt that size it would be a bear to turn and get to lay right.

I'm with Karen. Binding is the way to go. Tying would be fine. You can tie it with the thread ends showing on either the front or the back. If you don't want the ties to show use an embroidery floss that's color blends in with the colors in the quilt and tie so the tails are underneath. I have one I tied many moons ago and it has held up just fine. I probably used at least three strands of embroidery floss. (I'm out-of-country so I can't look at it to see how many I used.) I think perle cotton is also commonly used for tying quilts.

Binding. I started a king size quilt 20 yrs ago (my bad) and I´ve been hand quilting it. Binding is the way to go.

I am working on a king size right now.
I am tying it on the sides and the bottom. The middle I am tying it from the back cause I don't want the ties in the block designs. When I started tying it, I didn't think about the little ties sitting inside my blocks. So, mine will be about 1/2 tied from the top and 1/2 tied from the bottom.
Also, you actually have a 3rd choice on finishing it. You said either birth it or bind it. I am going to make my own binding and bind mine. You could also make the backing about 4-5 inches larger all around and fold it over to the front and pin it down and then sew it down with the machine. We just did one like that at the Guild and it turned out really nice.
