    Question Batting or no batting?

I'm making my first quilt/rag quilt. I'm using jean material and a flower patterened cotton material. The backing is sort of fleece sort of flannel(it's light weight and really soft). I'm not 100% sure what it is because the fabric I'm using was given to me.
So the ultimate question is, should I cut squares of batting? Or should I use the left over squares of flannel/fleece as a "batting" or should I not put anything between? I kinda feel like I should put something inbetween.
if it helps there's a slight slight chance we might be moving to alaska. lol
    Thanks!

I am finishing a quilt with fleece back and didn't want it to thick, so I am using flannel. It is working really nice..not to thick, but still nicely "heavy". I also wanted to do FMQ stippling and needed the layers to not be so thick. It is working out well.

FMQ = Free motion quilting. Personally with fabrics that heavy I would not use batting. It should be heavy enough without it. Good luck with your project, and welcome to the world of quilting.

Mrs. Bryan - Free motion quilting is a technique that allows you to use your machine to quilt without the use of your feed dogs. When the feed dogs are lowered you can move the quilt in any direction to form a design on the quilt. If you haven't done so already, just google it and you'll see lots of info. on the technique. Leah Day is a quilter who devotes alot of her time demonstrating and teaching the technique on her webiste called daystyledesigns.com.

My vote is no batting! If you aren't sure I'd go with something very lightweight. Flannel is about as light as it gets and a material that's often used as batting to make a lighter weight quilt. My mother used it all the time in her quilting. It's really nice for folks living in temperate climates. If you have enough of the fleece left over that would certainly be fine and wouldn't add any cost to your quilt.

    This is MY VOTE

I have made a denim quilt and beleive ME... NO BATTING.. it would be way to heavy!! Alaska or NOT it would be too heavy to sleep under. You can always add another blanket if you get cold, but just try to wash that quilt and your machine will go into cardiac arrest!!
