Mrs. Bryan - Free motion quilting is a technique that allows you to use your machine to quilt without the use of your feed dogs. When the feed dogs are lowered you can move the quilt in any direction to form a design on the quilt. If you haven't done so already, just google it and you'll see lots of info. on the technique. Leah Day is a quilter who devotes alot of her time demonstrating and teaching the technique on her webiste called daystyledesigns.com.
My vote is no batting! If you aren't sure I'd go with something very lightweight. Flannel is about as light as it gets and a material that's often used as batting to make a lighter weight quilt. My mother used it all the time in her quilting. It's really nice for folks living in temperate climates. If you have enough of the fleece left over that would certainly be fine and wouldn't add any cost to your quilt.
