The guest said the rougher side with the speckles is the wrong side and should go away from your quilt top (facing the wrong side of the backing). For years I've used W&N right out of the bag without ever giving it a second thought about the possibility of a right and wrong side and have had no ill effects!! If it really matters to you, put the wrong side facing away from your quilt top...if not, don't worry about it.
