    Default Stack and whack blocks

I'm fascinated by the look of stack and whack kaleidoscope quilt blocks. Is there a special ruler made for cutting these? I was shopping for a ruler to cut these, and the 60 degree rulers aren't right, you only whack 6 pieces, not 8? I have a pattern where you cut your own template, but I wondered if there was a stronger ruler that was made to cut these. It is something I can look for in Paducah in 2 weeks. Can't wait to go!

There are kaleidoscope rulers...the angles at the triangle base are 45 degrees. Quilt In A Day has one so maybe you get one from Eleanor Burns herself in Paducah!

I have a Marti Michell Kaleidoscope ruler. Probably bought it with a coupon from Joann's. I haven't used it yet. I'll have to see if there's video demo on u-tube. I sure do like the ruler demos that are on the web. Nothing like a visual to help make their use easier to understand.

    Here's the u-tube demo for the Kaleido-Ruler: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4o2K9LSmDK8

Here's one method for making the blocks that looks easy:

I, too, bought the 45 degree Marti Mitchell Kaleidoscope ruler at Joann's Fabric. I had to really look for it. I made one block, but I don't know if I will make more. It takes a bunch of fabric for matching if you are going to make one that looks good. Eight layers of matching. The ruler is such that you can't cut off the base of the triangle, so you Must cut your eight layers of matched fabric into the stip width you need. That is really hard and wasteful of fabric. Or, you can use it for a striped piece which is a lot easier.

Bethany Reynolds who dubbed the term Stack-n-Whack has many books and patterns available. Some of the individual patterns come with an acrilic template. I have two of them and have used them often.

Here's a link to her website's ruler page. I have the fan ruler and the 45 degree wedge ruler.

I have Bethany Reynolds' Stack and Whackier Quilts book. A good friend and I found the fabric on the cover of the book and each made that quilt. (a few years ago) It was fun to make. You can make a 4 piece, 6 piece or 8 piece block. Have fun!

to be honest, I've even done them without special rulers. I just made sure my repeats were well stacked, and used the 45 or 60 degree line on my rulers. Fan quilts are a little more challenging as the angle is different again depending on the number of blades.
