Need some ideas for a new quilt. I just know you all can help.
I am starting a new quilt for guess who? My two West Highland Terrier dogs. I saved all of the triangle collars that the groomer put on the dogs after grooming. So after several years of saving them; and of course new to quilting -- thought it would be a good idea to make them their own quilts. So any ideas? The triangles are 15" square with two put together and some are smaller at around 13" square with two put together.
Should I square them all up the same size? Should I try to strip piece this? Should I just sew two together to make a square and cut HST? Help. What do you think?

What do you mean by 2 put together?
And I would square them up the same size.

Are they "bandana" weight fabric? Or are they regular weight quiting cotton? I think that would determine what size to make the blocks, because lighter weight wouldn't work that well for larger pieces. That's my humble opinion. I've done lots of cool designs with larger HSTs, there are so many designs you can do with them. I have a book called "Big Block Quilts", it uses HST, rail fence, 4 patch and squares to make 160 different designs. It could give you some ideas on a way to arrange your blocks. I think it is published by Leisure Arts.

Yeah for Westies!!! Can hardly wait to see your quilt!

Sounds like a fun project to undertake. And what a great use of the triangles. I would cut them all the same size for sure. If you are using a plain background material you could always do a pinwheel with the triangles.
Can't wait to see what you decide on. I am going to have to check out "Big Block Quilts" that Jean mentioned. Sounds like a great book.

Great idea! I have never saved the bandanas.

Sorry, that wasn't very clear was it? I meant to say,,, that by putting two together is to put the triangles side by side to form a square. So they are different sizes... off by about 2 inches either way. So it is a great idea to make them the same size.

I don't really know what weight the cotton is that they used. I don't think that most of it is quality quilting cotton. And, yes I think it is bandana weight fabric. I would love a link to your book. So now that we know the weight is probably not the best, what to do? Just hated to see the fabric go to waste. It is just for the dogs to use to lie on around the house.

You can still use it! If you think it's too light in weight just use some spray starch to make it easier to cut them. You could also use lightweight fusible interfacing to give them more weight. Personally, I'd try the starch first and if not satisfied then I'd get some interfacing ironed onto each one.

I get it now, I thought the groomers put 2 together-I just had a DUH! moment.
Definitley still make the quilt, even if it's not the highest grade cotton! It will be fine!
And yes cutting them all the same size will be the easiest way to make it.

If they are difficult to sew with, you can always use a stabilizer to make it easier. If you already have large triangles, sew them in an hourglass block using 4 triangles (2 pairs of the same colour if you have a variety). Once they are done, you can cut them all down to the same size as your smallest one, maybe about 12".

I love your idea about using 4 triangles and cutting them down to about 12 1/2 inches to take care of the quarter inch sem allowance. Thanks.
