Are they "bandana" weight fabric? Or are they regular weight quiting cotton? I think that would determine what size to make the blocks, because lighter weight wouldn't work that well for larger pieces. That's my humble opinion. I've done lots of cool designs with larger HSTs, there are so many designs you can do with them. I have a book called "Big Block Quilts", it uses HST, rail fence, 4 patch and squares to make 160 different designs. It could give you some ideas on a way to arrange your blocks.
