    Default Applique question

Although I have been quilting for 10 years I rarely if ever do applique. I did a snowman on one of the kids stocking this past Christmas. I made one of our boys an Army quilt a couple months ago and the pattern I picked made it very busy although our son loves it. I decided to calm it before I sandwich and quilt it by putting solid color appliques of army men on it. So went online found wonderful site that had Army men coloring pages that look like the little plastic ones, just what I wanted! I tried it out this morning and major fail! I was not doing raw edge applique is that my only option when your applique has holes in the middle? http://www.coloring-pages-book-for-k...ring-page.html

I attached the link to the pages so you can see what I'm talking about about the holes in the middle of the pictures. Or should I just use the ones that I can make not have holes. Just by taking out the bottom stand between the legs.....I really hope I'm making sense!! Sorry for the long post!

    Hi Girl
you should be fine with those images if you use a bond web behind your applique shape. Irion the web to the back of the fabric before you cut out the image, then peel off the backing and iron onto your quilt. It helps secure the edges and make your stitching much easier. I usually satin stitch the edges of my applique, but only because I prefer the more solid outline, zig zag is fine too, less obviouse edge and suffient to prevent any fraying of your piece. Done forget to support your piece from behind while you sew it with a stabilizer........its like blotting paper, once sewn I always rip it off although some leave it.

Just make sure your images are not too tiny so that it makes catching the edges too hard on the machine. If you really want them tiny I would sew them on by hand. An 2 inch intricate applique I can mange on the machine.....just........anything smaller I would hand sew.

Here are a couple of appliques edged in satin stitch from my album, as I said a zig zag gives a less difined edge with is good for some shapes and is very much a personal preferance....I like the nieve look of a child's colouring book on my stuff......but..it uses a lottttttt of thread.

    Good luck!

If I chose not to do raw edge applique on the soldiers, I would take my seam ripper and make a small enough cut into the hole so I could slip my scissors in there and trim 1/4" away from the edge of the hole so I'd have seam allowance to turn under. If I decided I wanted that hole to be something other than the quilt fabric I'd add a piece of fabric that would be slightly larger than the whole but small enough to stay within the soldier's legs. I'd sew it on first and then sew on the soldier over top of it. Cutting off the stand is also an option and would eliminate the careful cutting required to remove enough fabric so you can turn under the seam allowance on the inside of the legs.

I could not get the link to open, but I think I understand your question. I do a lot of applique, If you check out my album of wall hangings you will see them. I use "wunder-under" or some type of fusible to hold the applique onto the fabric and then I either hand-sew around the applique, usually with a blanket stitch. If the applique is large enough I will use the machine to blanket stitch around. You can use other stitches as well. I never leave the applique with an unstitched raw edge. It will fray or come loose.
    Hope this is helpful.
