    Question denim quilt.

    ok so here is my deal...i have had a quilt in the works for awhile now ...but today i started cutting more for it. it is going to be a denim quilt. so my problem is i have been cutting old jeans i have saved for ten years now but the stuff i cut today was purchased from joanns and i forgot to wash it before i cut my pieces...i cut ALOT of pieces today and don't want to have to save it for a completely different quilt. so how much is it going to shrink when i wash it and should i use it and hope for the best or wait and put it into a different quilt and let it all shrink at the same time?

    try soaking your pieces without agitating them, wring out as best you can then let the pieces dry in the air, such as hanging them up; avoid the dryer for fear of fraying.

    Another thought is, is this a going to be a rag quilt: or will your seams be inside the quilt sandwich with other layers. If it's a rag quilt, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

    Another thought on denim quilts (I promise this is the last one), you won't need a layer of batting, and I wouldnt suggest you use denim for the backing. I did a denim rage quilt using denim on both sides and batting in the middle; it ways a ton and a half and I don't know what to use it for LOL The dog won't even lay on it!!! Go figure!!!

    You could always sew just inside the edges to keep them from fraying and then wash them.

    Germany is soo cold you can send that quilt to me Denis...just saying.....before next winter i'm making a few warm quilts, no central heat here. Sasha I would love to see your quilt. I have quite a bit of denim yardage from when I used to sew my girl's clothes thought I could make it into a quilt. Are you mixing with other fabric or just the denim? Thanks, Rachel

    I've had good luck stuffing pre-cut fabric into a sock. I was able to wash it and dry it in that sock. Because it's contained in close quarters it wasn't able to fray. You might give that a try with some of it to see if it works for you. If so, you can then be certain and finish washing all of the fabric with this method. You'll need to press the pieces. I'd probably let them dry til damp. That way you'll press out the wrinkles with ease.

    Denis' suggestion is a good one also. When you remove the fabric from the container you can lay them on a towel. Roll up the towel nice and tight. That's an easy way to remove the excess water. Then I would press with a very hot iron. That will also help with the shrinking as they dry under the iron.

    @rebecca
    that's a good idea to wash in a sock. I'll try it next time I have some scraps to wash. Thanks

    Only if you agree to pay for the shipping LOL. Honestly, with the cost of shipping, you could make about 5 of these quilts yourself.
