Default Need help in designing quilt with different size blocks

I want to design a quilt that has different size blocks (pictures of jungle animals from several fabrics). So far, I have had trouble figuring out how to assemble the blocks. Has anyone made a quilt that had a variety of block sizes? Any tips on how to do it? Should I try to figure out a common block size and piece coordinating fabrics to each image so that all of the blocks are the same size? Or is there a way to stagger the sizes for a more interesting layout?

I know, I'm crazy for even wanting to do this. But there's gotta be a way, right?

Hoping that you all can help!

    Jory

I'm linking Angie's Perfect Points quilt. It is made up of different sized blocks and maybe that can help you with an idea. I think you will either have to sash your blocks to make them all the same size or at least combine them to a uniform size (if that makes any sense.)

I made a t-shirt quilt using different sizes. I cut my blocks using multiples of 3. It worked and I just added pieces where needed (like a sashing) to make them line up.

I've done quite a few that have blocks of different sizes. I only have one posted in my album (tfrankum's album), but you can see how I sashed each piece with the same background material to make them fit together.

I did this but I had an alternating block that measured 6 1/2 inches. I did a memory table runner for my mom. I didn't pre measure the pictures I just filled in with fabric. Some had 2 pictures and I did like a four patch 2 pictures and two HST blocks some had thin sashing some had thick. I varied it and in the end I had 6 1/2" blocks to put together. I attached the picture I'm still hand quilting the border but maybe that will help you a little. Some of the others have blocks under. Rachel

My daughter picked out this quilt I'm making it from the twirl line another option then I'm appliqueing a giant scrappy flower from the second quilt...I need to stop letting the kids choose but at least it's easy!

The t-shirt quits I have made (my avatar) is from differnet sized t's as it was t's from 4 years of my GD's life. So I cut the front of the t that I wanted to use, and most were about 9". I wanted 12" blocks, so I appliqued the 9" t to a 12" block. If the t shape was bigger or smaller, it was always smaller than 12" so the blocks were all the same size but what was on the block was different sizes.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I used an Eric Carle print with different sized animals and just sashed the smaller ones bigger until they all turned out to be the same size. Maybe this would work with your jungle animals?

Jory, This is where a design wall is the best tool you will ever have!! (unless you are a math genius or whiz) Different size blocks can all go together as long as you have some fabric "bridges". Those pieces of fabric that will match up and even out the edges of your Main Blocks.

Think of it as a PUZZLE...get your blocks done and on the design wall..then figure out the size and color of "bridge" you will need to get it to match it's surrounding blocks. This is a time consuming method,, so don't rush the process... Granny
