    Default Thread help?

I have several spools of serger thread left from when I had a serger. Can it be used successfully with a regular sewing machine?

It would be a shame to throw the thread away, but I don't want to risk using it on a quilt and have it not hold up like it should.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can send my way.

I would not use serger thread for piecing a quilt--it is not as strong as thread for a sewing machine. The ply is different than regular sewing machine thread. I'm sure someone will be able to give you a more "technical" answer.

I don't know anything about a Serger...but instead of throwing the thread away...keep it for basting. I have better thread but in seperating it (after not sewing for about 10 years) saw I still have some cheapy stuff from Walmart and drug store..as it is marked 2/$1.00! I had been using C&C Cotton Poly Dual Duty for years and this was junk stuff cause I couldn't make myself throw things away. Now... I have been using that for basting instead of pinning and throwing it away after I use it isn't so bad...although I do re-wind some of the longer pieces and reuse them!

Serger thread typically has only 2 strands twisted together instead of the 3 strands that are usually in 'regular sewing' thread. That's why it isn't as strong. I have so much of it in so many colors, that I use it all the time for 'thread painting' or applique or decorative stitches on crazy quilt projects. I use it for basting too. Any place where you don't have to rely on it to hold fabrics together. The 'wooly' serger thread is really fun to use! . I also still use it on my serger..... lol

I agree that you should not use your serger thread for piecing a quilt....use it up basting your quilts or donate it to someone who serges.
