I FMQ all over the whole quilt, seams, borders, everything. I don't like to do SITD so I don't do it! :)
Ditto for the FMQ, I do some SITD, but it's not my favorite to do.
I SITD I don't do much FMQ...some times I use my Emb machine to do Stippeling...
I usually FMQ all over the entire quilt, but sometimes I'll do different patterns within different sections, blocks, or sashing. With that said...I do not enjoy stitching in the ditch...at all. I think it's a psychological thing about having to sew the same seams over, but I just don't do it.
I SITD only because I'm too chicken to FMQ and SITD is faster to finish. Sometimes I like the look that SITD gives, it defines the lines of the pattern edges. FMQ would flatted all the pattern edges. I guess it just depends on the look you are going for. I know one shop here in St. Louis does nothing but SITD, others do nothing but FMQ, it must just be a philosophy and style, and you go for whatever you want. Is the emphasis on the piecing or the quilting? For me, right now, it is one the piecing. I find piecing very fascinating.
I am also too chicken to FMQ! I've only tried FMQ one time and it was pretty much a disaster...
I'm new to machine quilting. I actually like SITD because it gives a similar affect that hand quilting does. I've only done a couple of small pieces by machine and I did both SITD and FMQing. The quilt I'm working on now is a version of Fence Rail and I don't want to do all of that SITD, so I'm going to FMQ over the whole top.
I usually do SITD because I like the simple look. Also I rarely stitch in every ditch.....on the other hand sometimes I stitch either side on a block to make a frame, like a double tram line.......nice effect. I dont worry about FMQ over seams....if the design so leads me, I follow. When I do mainly FMQ on a quilt I often do it on individual areas on the quilt, but other times I go mad I go all over.
Cheri........holds your face and looks at you.......... you doooooo seem to be doing a lot of asking...... dont be scared to start.......just slip that quilt into the machine and go for it. You WILL be fine :). Deep breath girlfriend.......now go meander!!
I've done FMQ in an all over pattern, crossing over seams. I have also done FMQ within sections of the quilt and then SID in sections for a specific effect. It all depends on what you're wanting to achieve. Neither is wrong--its entirely personal preference.
I rarely SITD as I don't like the look. I just FMQ over the whole quilt though nowadays I usually send my tops out to be long-arm quilted.
Okay, I'm going in! FMQ all the way - all over the place!!!!
I rarely FMQ, but when I do I go over all seams. Sometimes I only Ditch, but mostly I send my tops out for quilting now that I can no longer hand quilt (I wore out the joint in my quilting finger). :)
Go for broke. Stitch over everything. You'll be fine.
Too scared to FMQ so I can't wait to see how you do!!! Good luck!
Depends. If I'm just stippling the whole quilt, I go over the seams. If I am putting a design in the blocks, I usually SITD first around the blocks and borders. Then I do the FMQ in the blocks/borders.
I just finished SITD a D9P and I am not crazy about the look. I think for me from now on I will Just FMQ the whole thing, peddle to the floor style. LOL
