Most people change the needle after every quilt project.

Sometimes you'll get skipped stitches or little knots in your seams. I also change my needle with every large project or a few smaller ones.

So if it sounds like my needle is "punching" through instead of "gliding" through, might be a good indication? lol

How about maintenance? How often should a machine be serviced?

Machine should be serviced at least once a year.

I change my needle regularly, if straight sewing I switch it out after 8 hours of sewing. If doing embroidery I'll do it after 2-3 projects.
