    Default FMQing...where to do it?

What is the best way to do quilt top FMQing? I have just learned FMQ and do stippling (random shapes) and have been stippling inside the blocks or strips. however, I watch videos and such and they just FMQ all over the quilt...over seams and from one block to another...in a pattern of course, but I have been keeping my stitching within the seams of the shape.

Question: What's the deal? Why do they do it all over and not just within the shapes seams? I don't cross a seam. Not that I can't , I just don't. Why do they do that and is that the right way?

I also have the problem that the stippling tends to make the quilt very firm and stiff and not at all a "cuddly" quilt. I know to not be any closer than 1 inch from stitch line to stitch line...and have done that, but I see others doing it closer and still even with the space...it tends to make the quilt stiff.

Any comments or tips and tricks for doing top quilt stitching FMQing and still have a soft cuddly quilt?

You can FMQ all over the quilt. Actually, quilting across the seams adds a bit to the strength of the quilt.

If your quilt is too stiff, run your lines farther apart. You don't have to have them one inch apart, they can be 3 or 4" apart as long as your batting says it will hole up to being quilted that far apart. Less quilting = softer quilt.

Do they call a wider apart stippling stitch a meander?

I think stippling can be done either way. You just get a different look. I like to do it all over because I like the look of it

Jean - Yes. Stippling is the term for a very small, tight quilting design. The larger quilting design we see so often in quilting today is called meander/ing. The term stipple is misused quite often. Quilting over the entire quilt is perfectly acceptable. The quilting we see on quilts that have been LAQ at M* are over the entire quilt. I believe it gets alot more expensive if one orders customized quilting. There's a lot of planning time involved. All-over quilting does add more strength to the seams as well. It's a preference thing. Either way is fine. Since I use my embroidery machine to quilt, most of the quilting I'm doing is all over. Since I am totally dependent on purchased designs off the web I am somewhat limited by the size of their designs. Hopefully, I'll get some software to do some designing so I can do more cusomized quilting but for now all over is just fine for me. I'm also lazy! LOL By the time I get the top together I just want the darn thing quilted for that immediate gratification thing. If I have to spend lots of time figuring out how to place designs within the seams I get frustrated. That's certainly the beauty of FMQ. You can plan it out and make it fit a lot easier.

Cheri - Go larger! Not only will your quilt be softer but you'll get it quilted in half the time! What could be better than that!?!
