2 1/2" will be fine. You will fold it in half (like binding) and sew your 1/4" seam. The finished part stick out (the flange) will 1". That's not too wide for a large top. Barb

Here in the D.C. area the quilt classes I've taken call it flange, not piping. Now we are all clear on what it is and no, I'm not offering a recipe for flan!

I was thinking about cutting the jelly roll in half but just wasn't sure. Being new to quilting, I like to hear others opinions! Thanks all!

    Be warned. I am BORED.
    This could be dangerous.

When you get cold just go stand in the corner.
    They are usually 90 degrees.

A giraffe's coffee would be cold by the time it reached the bottom of his throat.
Ever think about that? No? You only think about yourself??

Yep, that's what I know as a flange as well.

If you ever make it to New Mexico I can take you to a restaurant that some friends own that has one of the best flans I've ever had. Hmm, I wonder if they'd share the recipe.

I usually call it a flap.

I know they are a challenge for machine quilters as the flap tends to get caught by the foot of the machine and flips over.

Wouldn't piping have a cord inside the fabric?
