    Default Dresden plate center

Ok so like i said in earlier post, I found these blades already cut out for a dresden plate but there is no center circle. My question is how do you figure out how big of a circle to put in the middle? just personal preference? trial and error? I know i want it in per portion to the plate but not so big that the blades look small, understand?

I'd press the blades out nice and smooth, measure across the hole in the middle and add an inch for turning under (if your hole measures 3" across cut your circle 4"), or if you are going to do raw edge applique maybe just make it overlap the center edges by 3/8 to 1/2 inch.

You can also cut a cardboard circle and put it against the blades if too big you can cut it down till you have the size you want then use that as your template.

I don't remember how I decided on the size for the circles on my Dresden Plate, but I wanted to let you know the method I used for them. I cut the circles in the fabric as well as in sew-in interfacing. Sewed the circles right sides together. Cut a slit in the interfacing and turned the circles right-side-out. Smoothed the edges, and stitched the circles in place (after I had put the plates on the background fabric. I used the machine blanket stitch to sew the plates and circles on the background fabric. good luck, and post pictures after you have decided!!! There are so many ways to applique.

I saw something neat to do a circle applique. You cut two circles, stitch them together wrong side out with water soluble thread leaving a turning space, turn right side out, press with steam and they will separate and you have two that have a perfect turned under edge/seam allowance.

You can also do Nanab's method and use heat n bond so you have a bondable surface on the bottom once it is turned right side out.

Knowing that I will be doing tons of circles in my Cal K sized dresden quilt......I so appreciate the tips, too. Thanks both Nana B and Claire....I will be trying both techniques to see what works best. I have tried Jenny's suggestion, but it didn't work so neatly for me.
