Quilt Ideas for Cancer patient...
I was wondering if anyone could offer some ideas on some simple or easy quilt patterns? There is a lady (she's around the age of 40) at my church who has cancer...she just found out last month that she had cancer of the esophagus and in the past few weeks she has found out that it has spread to several other areas of her body..I would really like to make her a quilt as a gesture of kindness...however I am a newbie at quilting and I was just wondering if anyone would have any ideas for something that's not too hard but still lovely.. something lap size is what I want to do.. Thanks and I hope I'm posting this in the right place.. :)

The Disappearing Nine Patch (DP9) is an easy pattern. It goes together quick and easy and looks pretty impressive when finished.

there is the tutorial on it.

You are in the right place! The dissapearing nine patch is the best! Prayers for you and your friend!
Re: Quilt Ideas for Cancer patient...
I would do the disappearing 9 patch!!!
Re: Quilt Ideas for Cancer patient...
It seems to be unanimous! D9P!!!
Re: Quilt Ideas for Cancer patient...
Although I have yet to make a D9P, it seems the one that is always recommended to beginners. I would say that would be the one. And you can use some nice bright and cheery fabrics also.
I guess a D9P is going to be one of my next projects.
Re: Quilt Ideas for Cancer patient...
Thanks for the suggestions! I think I will probably try the Disappearing Nine Patch...that is what everyone has suggested and it doesn't look too hard..:)...I was wondering about how many charm packs I will need though...do ya'll think that 3 charm packs would be enough for a lap size quilt? I will most likely add an inner and outer border so that will increase the size....
Re: Quilt Ideas for Cancer patient...
What a lovely gesture! I agree that the D9P is the fastest and easiest and looks great no matter how you put it together!
I think 3 is way plenty...120 squares at a little less than 5"...so a rectangle shape with 10 across and 12 down plus borders would make a nice size! You can make the borders larger or smaller as you needed.
Prayers for your friend...
Re: Quilt Ideas for Cancer patient...
I just finished a D9P quilt and it took 81 squares plus a 5" binding to make a 48" square quilt. So if you wanted it longer, you would have to add about 1 charm pack or 27 more squares.
Each 9 patch section would make a 13-1/2" finished square, so you need to figure out how big you want it, and then figure out the amount of charms. Remember, every charm pack has a different number of squares in it, some are more and some less than others. So, since I love using my lousy math skills for figuring out stuff, if you used 12 9 patch squares to begin with (before cutting it up), you would need 108 charm squares. This would give you a quilt top 40-1/2" x 54". Then you would need to add borders to make it bigger if you wanted it bigger. You can make it larger by putting sashing between the sets of 4 blocks, but I think that ruins the look of the D9P pattern. I've also seen someone make the D9P in a rectangle, then putting a narrow border around it in plain fabric, then a piano key border of charms, cut in half and sewn together in a random pattern for an outer border. That is in someone's album, and it is very sharp looking!
